Russian RDG-5 grenades in both blasts
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Evidence found at the scene of bomb attacks on the anti-government protests in Banthad Thong Road and the Victory Monument on Friday and Sunday has revealed the type of explosive used.

Experts say in both cases it was a Russian-made RDG-5 grenade, suggesting the attackers may be from the same group.

RDG stands for Ruchnaya Granata Distantsionnaya in Russian or "Distance Hand Grenade" or "Time-delayed Hand Grenade" in English. It is a post-World War II Soviet anti-personnel fragmentation grenade and was in service by many Russian "client" countries.

Local police have offered no other clue to the source of the bombs used in the attacks.

Experts say it is not an easy explosive to use and only well-trained people can throw it safely as it goes off in four seconds after its pin is released. "Unless the thrower is well trained, the bomb could explode in the air and hurt him," an official said.

The grenade can inflict injuries up to 15 metres from the site of the detonation. Victims caught within 3 metres of the blast site are almost certain to be severely wounded.

These granades cost $5 apiece wholesale and have been sold worlwide by the milliom. I imagine anyone with a mind to do it could buy a sack of them in Cambodia.

What is the link between Bout and Suthep?

Only the link in Nowhereman's head, like a few other links he likes to post about.

Could this be part of the cargo, which was on that aircraft a few years ago? Where did all those weapons and explosives go?

When the black shirts were operating in Bangkok in 2010 there were rumours they were ex Thai army based in Cambodia, being flown in and out for operations.

I wouldn't be surprised to find the same thing here.

This article is bullshit and it's intent is to mislead. All grenades are highly dangerous and once the pin is pulled it has no friends, however, the pin can be pulled and you can sit down and have a coffee if you have a mind to as long as you do not release the cocking lever(spoon). When it is thrown the spoon is automatically released and the grenade fusing system is activated initiating the time delay. A dangerous operation but far from difficult requiring only a basic understanding of the arming mechanism a good grip and a strong arm..The comment in the original article claiming that "experts" say that the thrower needs to be well trained is nonsense.

Maybe the work of some of Suthep's "southern friends" that he brought to Bangkok. Maybe the Syrian Army, Hamas, Taliban, or Al Qeada? If these grenades had been used in Mynamar, even Buddhist monks might be suspect. The world is flooded with these kinds of mass produced, cheap weapons that a moron can use and obviously do use. The bottom line is that police need to do their job to identify and prosecute the perpetrators and not incite mobs to decide the guilty.

The grenade DOES NOT explode 4 secs after the pin is pulled. It explodes 4 secs after the fuse is ignited which occurs as the "spoon" lever is released.

The level of expertise required for use is about the same as hitting someone with a stick.

Not quite; The inexperienced can end up 'Juggling' :)
