Emergency's latest casualty: Thailand Open golf tournament
Agencies

BANGKOK: -- Organisers of the Thailand Open have decided to postpone this year's tournament due to the state of emergency declared in Bangkok.

The US$1-million tournament had been scheduled to take place from March 13 to 16 at Thana City Golf & Sports Club but will be moved to a more suitable date later in the year.

"We want to ensure the environment is stable in order to stage our world class tournament and national Open," said Rungsrid Luxsitanonda, president, Thailand Golf Association.

"There is just six weeks to go before the tournament, so it would be unwise to proceed with the current date."

The Thailand Open is jointly sanctioned by OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO) and was to be the season-opening event for both Tours.

"It was unanimously agreed by all relevant parties to postpone the championship. This is in the best interests of the players, spectators, sponsors, sanctioning bodies and officials," said Patrick Feizal Joyce, vice president, Golf, World Sport Group, the event promoter.

"We will work with the TGA, the JGTO, OneAsia and Thana City to determine a new date in 2014."

With gormless Chalerm in charge, it's quite possible a golf tournament crowd could be mistaken for protesters.

Or new political groups with new colors.

Wonder how TAT will spin this one ?

BREAKING NEWS. Thailand has been a awarded a world class, $1 million golf tournament for the 2014 season. This again proves that golf pros believe what we already know: Thailand is a golfer's destination. This will increase our gdp and tourist arrivals from the 2013 season.

I was thinking that under the headline " Thais Love The World " it has been decided to stand the tournament down for a year to give lesser known events such as The Master's a chance to establish themselves.

Well another loss for Tourist Authority Thailand TAT. one million in prize money and it has already cost millions to do up the course to be played on, let alone the visitors that would have come from overseas and Thailand costing millions more. They will never learn. We are talking dollars not Baht.

If the calendar is too tight they could just play the 19th and declare a winner.

Do you think the protests are stopping the tournament or the SoE? Or would you like it both ways?

Mobs, whistles, even hand grenades I can handle . . . .

but when they cancel my golf then the gloves are off bah.gif .

While your gloves are off, you may want to take a closer look at this so-called open. According to at least one local tour pro, it is about as open as Suthep's mind. The pro comes from a working class family and was prohibited from entering and said there are no qualifier events as are fundamental to determine the field in open golf tournaments. Of course there are exempt players but the very nature of an open tournament is that it is open to all who can qualify for the number of spots available. He said sponsors dictate who gets to play. If this is accurate, the Asian and Japanese Tour offices need their hands slapped for supporting a bogus event. Further, if any of the bigger names receive appearnce fees that should also disqualify the event from using the term 'open' to label an ordinary ho-hum event. And if that is not enough, the primary sponsor, BTS, engages in discrimination by allowing only Thai citizens to receive senior discount fares on their sky trains. Kind of a sour proposition all the way round.

There is a God!

Mark Twain was right, "Golf is a good walk spoiled."

This quote has been dubiously attributed to Twain, Churchill, and others but the earliest known occurrence originated in a book in 1903 by a writer named Scrivener.

I stand corrected, thank you. For those interested in the many attributions, here's a link http://quoteinvestigator.com/2010/05/28/golf-good-walk/

But I was still right about the anti - golf God wasn't I?
