Japanese businessman arrested

(Ayutthaya) The Japanese owner of a major construction firm was arrested in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district on Saturday for possessing and selling speed pills.

Shikeru Ichii, 44, was arrested outside the Sakaewan restaurant on Thanon Wat Pa Ko in tambon Hua Ror by police posing as customers.

Police said they found 20 methamphetamine tablets in his possession.

Mr Ichii is the founder of the Polawat construction company which has won building contracts in industrial estates. The firm is currently extending factories in the Rojana Uthai industrial estate in Uthai district. Police said the businessman bought the pills from a supplier in Ayutthaya for resale to colleagues in business circles.

His customers also included lounge hostesses and prostitutes working in Japanese bars in the province. Mr Ichii would demand they had sex with him if they were unable to pay.

Police say Mr Ichii confessed that he had sold drugs for many years. He managed to avoid arrest previously because police doubted he was involved in drugs.

Police are investigating whether Mr Ichii was part of a gang, and may recommend seizure of his assets in Ayutthaya, Bangkok and Samut Prakan if they think they were acquired using money from his drug deals.

Sorta surprised they didn't just shoot him but perhaps the powers-that-be figured they might be able to extract a fair amount of tea money from this bloke.
