Visa on arrival

Featured Replies

My Brother and a friend are visiting us in Thailand for 10 days my brother on a U.K. passport so no problems, his friend has an Indian passport so needs to get a visa on arrival. As we are arranging for a taxi to pick them up I was wondering how long it normally takes to get a visa on arrival so that the taxi driver can judge what time to get to Suvarnabhumi, can any one advise on their experiences on getting visa on arrival at Bangkok.

Thanks.

Why ARRANGE a taxi . .you can get both VIP limousine (arrival level) as well as regular Bangkok meter taxis (one level below arrival level) at the airport. Would it make a big difference ?

He can get a taxi or limousine in the airport with standard charge. My advise to take one from airport, not sending taxi and waiting them to finish he will take extra money becouse he will charge you for going to airport and coming back again to your address.

To answer your questions, which neither of the previous answers have....

It can take 10 mins and it can take a hour, it really depends on how busy they are and any number of other factors. However, it really should unlikely to make a difference of more than 30 mins, provided the passenger has all the necessary paperwork prepared etc.

If the immigration isnt busy, then it wouldnt take more than 5-7 mints max but if the que is long then ofcourse no one can give you exact time but roughly 35-45 mints.

Depends if an Air Indian flight arrives the same time it could be a long wait.

Be aware that taxis are not accessible from any level of the terminal except the ground level. At ground level, taxis must que up. With all the available transport at the airport and all the recent restrictions on taxis, it may be wiser to let your guests get a taxi at the ground level taxi stand.

there are several nationalities who are issued a visa on arrival, india is one among them.

you have a fill in a form such as place of stay in Thailand etc (other than the one obtained in the flight).

once filled in, pay 1000baht fee and Indians are given 15 day visa. if that queue is too long, pay another 200 more and go on a fastrack line which normally has more attention and you finish passport control in 15-20 mins.

I have had instances where, I finished passport control as above, while my friends aussies and brits were in still in the normal 'visa not required q'

I've never had to wait long for the taxi queue on the ground level. It IS possible to grab a taxi on the departures level after it's let someone off, and I know some few do it, but it's not permitted. Plenty of enforcement staff up there who you'd think would be policing this, but, well, you know...

Airport Rail Link (station is down on the basement level) is another option for getting downtown if not arriving late at night.

Only if you ignore the gates set up to prevent access. Also, getting a taxi at the departures area can be dangerous and expensive since they are not registered. Taxi guys-just register and get in line with the others.

And unlike years ago, a more-or-less hassle free process is assured, courtesy of an extra B50 payable to the driver.

To my knowledge, they have put a process in place to stop arriving passengers catching taxis from departures - though I haven't bothered since the introduction of the queueing system and have no idea how it works.

Fences were in place last time at Swampy. Also taxi que pretty efficient even with large crowds now that they put in more desks.
