Reds to rally nationwide Friday in support of poll

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana meets with Election Commission chairman Supachai Somcharoen at the Royal Thai Army Club yesterday for discussions on whether to go ahead with the February 2 election.

BANGKOK: -- The red-shirt United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) will hold a mass rally nationwide on Friday, red leader Nuttawut Saikuar said. He however refused to elaborate on the plan, saying there would be an announcement today.

Nuttawut, also deputy commerce minister, said the move was aimed at promoting next Sunday's election, and would be peaceful. Meanwhile, the red shirts' Twitter account @udd_red posted messages announcing that in addition to the nationwide rally, a big event would be held in Samut Prakan on Friday evening.

Nuttawut says, then Thida says, and they all contradict one another. Doesn't matter what they say, all they can really do is wait for Papa T bellow his orders from the land of sand and jump to attention when he does. If this election doesn't go through it may blow his chance to get back here any time soon.

Of course they will rally, the time for being silent has passed, no one should be either surprised or shocked.

Someone also has to keep the voting venues open on sunday. I wouldnt be surprised to even see the red shirts out there doing their bit to keep the venues open.

They may as well fill ballot boxes up with enough votes to make it legitimate. Across the country. And miraculously come up with 5 million votes from Thais abroad just to make sure everything adds up. Why not let them vote multiple times? Why not let them count the votes? Those guys cheated when everything was under some sort of control. The election on 2nd February is going to be an absolute farce. A farce of Shakespearean proportions.

It's the normal and natural course of events for a major political party to have rallies during the final week of the lead up to a general election. Get the rank and file fired up, make sure they get out to vote, remind 'em of why they support the incumbent government, have the courtesy and respect to ask for the vote of each citizen.

In this particular election, it's vital to remind the voters that showing up at the polls in face of a mortal danger to democracy in the country is the necessary and courageous thing to do especially given there are fascist militants who want to stop the election and to kill democracy.

It's equally if not more important to remind the party members of what they are not, in this instance not right wing extremist nationalist feudalists whose ideology is that they as Suthep's militants are pure and the true patriots. They in fact are the opposite of the vast majority of the Thai people who are political moderates in the country's political center, the vast and broad legitimate political center.

Why not stop whining and let the process happen as it is legally supposed to, you can whine and shout all you like but the vast majority support an unhindered election, dems could have taken part they opted out ... tough

No point crying about it now the protesters were offered a delay they refused all talks and compromise now suck it up and let the rest of the country cast votes for who they wish. There are loads of parties to vote for not just your lover boy in Dubai

I can't see the comparison: the Thai election is at least interesting, grid iron isn't. -maybe you're talking about the half a ton of Kevlar body armour that the grid iron chappies wear. If they lent that to the Bangkok police, maybe they'd be able to break up the demos.

Actually the Super Bowl reaches Thailand early Monday morning (2nd in the US). By this time Bangkok will still be raging in civil war from the previous day.

And there aren't reds only from Samut Prakan. Money comes from the same wallet nationwide from benefitting from the rice scheme to feeding the red army.

Last time their "Pro-election Demonstration" counts 30.000 (official) people in whole Thailand, fully blamed..

Some people like to point out that Suthep isn't a nice man, that he is corrupt. They may well be right, I don't like him, but think of this. If such a distasteful, nasty little man can bring out millions of people to protest, risking life and limb, against Thaksin and the rest of the clan. What does that say about Thaksin? and what could a very well respected person, willing to speak out, accomplish. Pointing out Sutheps shortcomings is fair, but all it does is point out how bad Thaksin is. Expecting people that love their country to sit down and accept that their country will be drained of it's resources and will be run by an exile, or one of his proxies, is to much to ask.

It will be interesting to see Chalerm's evenhanded dispersal of both the pro and anti-Govt protestors and their financial supporters at the same time as (according to him and Tarit of the DSI) they will both be breaking the law and will subsequently be facing arrest and having their bank accounts frozen and appearing on that "blacklist".

Apparently, the Border Police are the ones that have now been drafted in to deal with this situation rather than the regular Police, who seem only capable of standing around doing nothing and watching people get shot without offering any assistance.

It's a shame, as far along as Thailand has come (maybe that's questionable), one has to struggle so hard & risk assault to cast a vote. Really turned my stomach to see some of those youtube videos of early voting where elderly woman trying to get to the poll, were being harassed with whistles, yelled at, pulled to the ground, ect....

I also read that the courts did not authorize the arrest warrants for protest leaders instigating all this. So, in effect, they're saying it's legal to run a muck in Thailand & stomp all over anyone's constitutional rights.

The preliminary elections fell on Australia day last week, would that be ironic too?

Red Shirt activists plan pro-election rally Friday

BANGKOK, Jan 29 – Red Shirt activists from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) will hold a major rally in outlying Samut Prakan province on Friday to support the general election on Sunday.

UDD chair Thida Thavornseth said yesterday that the pro-government group disagreed with rescheduling the countrywide election and opposed any movement that could lead to a coup or other rebellious activity.

She said the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) has insisted on removing the caretaker government no matter if the snap poll is held on Sunday or postponed.

Ms Thida called on the government to urgently assist farmers who have yet to receive payment for the rice they sold months ago under the rice pledging scheme.

Farmers should be paid to prevent the PDRC from exploiting it as a political issue, she said.

Vorachai Hema, a Pheu Thai Party member, said the Friday rally will be held at Bangpu resort which is located outside the state of emergency zone.

“It will be massive rally to urge people to go to the polls. We will not allow anyone to seize polling stations,” he said. (MCOT online news)

I wonder if the rallies will point out that the rice scam is now cancelled, finished, kaput. No more subsidies, just lingering debts.
