Language School/Centre Licencing

Featured Replies

This post is about starting a language school, but I'm posting in the Teaching forum, as opposed to Business forum, because the answers to the specific questions that I have are probably known to some experienced posters here.

There have been various threads about starting your own language school or tutor centre, and I only want to discuss some specific aspects of this type of business, not a general discussion about 'how to lose your investment'!

It is unclear to me if there is a difference, (as far as licencing is concerned), between calling your business a language school, or calling it a language or tutor centre. I wish to offer English language lessons only to a range of customers, (eg adult, IELTS preparation, business English etc).

Is there an easier route to getting the necessary licencing approvals if the business is not a 'school'?

Secondly, I also understand that the Director of this business needs to be a Thai national with a higher level of education, (which rules out my ex-wife ha-ha!). Is that correct?

Finally, I have read that the easiest route to licencing, (albeit maybe not the best route from a profit POV), is to buy a franchise licence from an existing chain of language schools, who will have the necessary Director already in place. Is that correct? I cannot recall seeing such franchise opportunities, other than the purchase of an existing office+franchise licence.

Thanks for any advice

As far as I am aware language schools and tutor schools/centres are both classified as non-formal schools and MoE licensing requirements are the same. The reality is that most tutor schools do not register their schools with the MoE. The MoE has very little power to enforce compulsory registration but this may be changing in the near future. Any type of business that operates as a 'school' such as a language school, TEFL training course, tutor centre, cooking school, massage training school etc needs to be registered as a non-formal school with the MoE. Again, the reality is that many ignore requirements and there is no enforcement.
