Auto-parts orders slashed

Truck makers have cut down parts orders by 70 per cent, as sales slow on intensifying political tension, according to the Thai Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (TAPMA).

TAPMA honourary president Prasartsilp On-aht said that dealers now have hard times selling big trucks. Meanwhile, small trucks still can find buyers, but combined vehicle sale volume could fall below forecasts. He said that the auto production in Thailand may fall from the 2.7 million unit target in 2014 to 2.55 million.

"Part makers are struggling to cope with the situation," he said. Small companies suffer the most, he added. At some companies, overtime production has been cut down by half.

He expected the situation to improve in the third quarter.

The auto-parts industry generates annual revenue of about Bt700 billion.
