Pattaya does have quite a range of shops and markets you know, many of them have an impressive range of knives for sale at very affordable prices.

True, but it has never tempted me personally to go and buy a knife and go stabbing people.

tonyja
Honestly when I was in Pataya last week after a year missing I found myself right in Moscow . In fact part of Pataya felt like china town and most of it was exactly Russia ( nothing against Rusian or Chinese though ) . So the percentage of the attackers being Rusian is probably higher than Brits. Sent from up to me from where it was sent
recycler
Hope the Danish gets well soon. Its "Dane;" he's a human being, not a breakfast treat. Maybe that was also where the Russians got it wrong and started cutting him. Al together not getting a safer image of Pattaya as a place to go out reading Thai Visa!

Russians are model tourists, Police do not have any problem with their behavior, no Mafia, no one working illegally... etc..... These may be low class people, but they are not representative of Russians. Every nationality in the world has it's problem elements - why should Russia be any different? The reason Thailand attracts so many Russians is that they do not require a visa to visit. So many other countries place restrictive visa requirements on them, so they go where it is easiest to go. The more Russians who come, the more likelihood that nutters will be amongst the mainly good, decent and honest people.
witchhunter
you never what could happen , alcohol most probably , "girlfriends " or any other motives ..... after all this is Pattaya . Stabbing a person with a knife is common for "Russians" that are actually from Caucasian republics of RF. I have to say that it looks like one "Russian" refugee (from Chechnya?) who got a Danish citizenship has been attacked by other people from Chechnya just for been at an opposite side of a no-ending war in Chechnya. As a Russian citizen myself I heard a lot of similar stories from Russia. Well, people may travel and meet their war foes. It happens.

sojourner007
The Danish victim actually has a typical Russian first name, 'Vasiliy'. It's quite likely that he himself is also Russian by origin.

wellwell
The real sadness is that these two will be facing up to 20 years in prison, in contrast to two Thais who would be lucky to get 3 years.

Docno
"Vasily" is also a Greek name and is fairly common for Orthodox Christians, English translation is "William". The Greek version is Basil and means 'king'. William has Germanic, not Greek, roots and does not mean 'king'.
Docno
Before people go off suggesting the victim is not a 'real Dane', while his given name is broadly Russian, his surname is Danish (or German, etc.). Quite possible--even likely--he was born in Denmark to a Danish father and Russian mother. As an aside, I have a Scottish given name and apparently not a wee bit of Scottish blood...
