so my last question

i look flights nok and airasia

nok is 6200b for 2 people its include some buses transfers

and air asia is like 4200b-4500b no buses

both flights to udon

if i would go air asia to udon i would have to get buses myselt to get to vietnaine

how hard it is from udon airport to nong khai and then u need cross bridge get shuttle bus i think, and then bus to vientiaine

is it worth it hassle or i should go with nok pay bit more and get some bus transfers both way

air asia got better flight departures as well and arrivals as well

big thx

The difference between airfares would almost be the same as transportation for two from the airport to Vientiane and back would cost. Plus the convenience of not having to deal with arranging your transport at every stop along the way.

The Thai GF rules to enter Laos : The GF needs a Picture ID Card and also a most recent passport size photo .

Entry fee for her is less then 100 bht .

You can take Air Asia and go yourself to Nong Khai. It is only 55 km from Udon, about an hour by bus. Cost is 35 Baht. Starts at Ubon bus station. From Nong Khai bus station you take a tuktuk to the border, 50 Baht. Then you go to Thai border, make exit stamp, then take a bus to Lao border office for 20 baht, and there you apply for visa on arrival. If you are Swiss, Japanese or from Luxembourg, you do not need a visa, you get visa-free entry for 15 days. Otherwise apply for the visa on arrival, cost is 31 US$. Pay in US$, otherwise it is more expensive. Your GF just needs a valid ID card to enter Laos PDR, no visa required. Bus from Udon airport to bus station: 80 baht.

Thai gf can use thai id instead passport?

mataleo

Yes for up to 3 days and 2 nights and only in Vientiane prefecture (Kampaeng Nakorn or Vientiane Capital) even though there's no ID checks outside of town, but technically border passes aren't valid for travel in areas further away from the border. If she has a passport entry is free except for a 40 Baht card fee on the Lao side of the bridge, whereas border passes cost money and time to make on the Thai side and a fee is collected on the Lao side both when entering and exiting I believe.

If she has a passport she should use it instead of getting a border pass.

She has to apply for a border pass it is not just a matter of showing ID to immigration.

She has to go to a travel agency or a border pass office to get it which will delay you leaving Thailand.

Nok air would of waited for you to get your visa on arrival. How long it takes depends upon the number of people applying.

You can take a van from airport to the bridge that will cost about the same as going into town and taking a bus to the bus station in Nong Kai, and then a tuk tuk to the bridge. Why go through all that to save a few baht.

Why not fly direct to Vientiane?

If your GF has a passport, use it.

Flying BKK to Vientiane (on Lao Airlines--the only airline that flies the route, AFAIK) is about 2x the price of Nok or AirAsia to Udon...6k RT vs. 3k RT (per person)!! That's why.

Bangkok Airways, THAI Airways (2 flights per day) and Lao Central Airlines all fly from Bangkok to Vientiane non-stop daily in addition to Lao Airlines. However, all of them are more expensive than flying to Udon or Khon Kaen and then going overland from there.

Good luck trying to find American dollars in all of Udon Thani including the exchange counters at the airport! Do your stuff in Bangkok before you come to backwoods Isaan!

Actually Udon Thani and Nong Khai have become quite civilized Fookhaht. Banks, Shopping Plaza's, Hotels, 3 private hospitals, 2 public hospitals etc, etc. Almost too civilized for my liking. Traffic is looking more and more like Bangkok in downtown Udon every year.

I live between Udon and Nong Khai and have no problem doing my banking, including buying $US for going to Laos at a bank branch.

However, I do agree there could be a problem depending on the currency exchange in the Udon airport having $US to sell. They are set up to change Western currencies into Baht. It would be best to bring your $US with you and avoid any hassle.

I'll keep it simple.

I am in Thailand on a 1 year type O multiple entry vis.

Thai Immigaration just called my Thai wife and told her that I need to leave country and come back with a new stamp (in 3 days).

Thai wife likes nong Kai, and would like to spend the night in Laos.

How much do I have to pay (all total) to get my American visa stamped?

Thanks

You would pay $35 or 1500 baht for a Lao visa on arrival. That would be the only cost for leaving and re-entering the country to get a new 90 day entry from your visa.

I did the Nok air to Vientiane in late 2012, easy no stress and worth the little extra, Vientiane is dead and you would be going to find a van or taxi to get you to the border if you weren't clued up on what goes on in Laos.

Nok will wait for you most of that passengers on your flight are staying in Thailand.

I got my Laos visa in BKK at there embassy so when I got to the border it was just a stamp and off I went.

No Laos hits you for a couple of bucks to leave the country, took me by surprise that was August 2012.

I think you are writing about the 40 baht fee that lots of people complain about. Some even refuse to pay it. I did not think it was worth mentioning.
