At least 30 Cambodians shot dead by Thai soldiers last year: ADHOC

The Cambodia Herald

PHNOM PENH - The Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) said that at least 30 Cambodian people were shot dead by Thai soldiers last year.

Speaking Tuesday at a news conference, Chuon Chamrong, head of ADHOC's women and children section, said those people were shot dead while they illegally crossed the border to find jobs and cut down trees in Thailand.

ADHOC said that it received complaints involving 200 cases of human rights abuses, and trafficking and abuse of migrant workers in 2013.

Among 560 victims, 200 Cambodian migrant workers were abused in Thailand.

ADHOC cooperated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Ministry of Interior to rescue and repatriated 164 victims.

It also urged the Cambodian government and officials at the Cambodian Embassies in foreign countries to be more aware and pay more attention to the Cambodians who work in Thailand.

If it’s anything to go by illegal loggers in other border areas often carry weapons so can understand the killings, if challenged, by Thai security forces. The killing of assumedly unarmed cross border illegal workers is murder and those in the security forces should be held accountable, but don't hold your breath.

So it's fine to kill people for this. <deleted>. The Thais have slaughtered dozens of Khmer's over the past 2-3 years, while I do not sympathise with the loggers that does not give the Thai's the right to shoot on sight. Having seen first hand the abuse of ordinary Khmer's by the military and the border guards when legally coming through the Trat border crossing, I have no doubt the Thai's are just doing this for fun. They very clearly take great pleasure in being able to hit the poor Khmer day workers, make them sit for hours in the sun or just hurl abuse at them or spit on them. It is sickening to witness.

Are the felled trees then brought back into Cambodia or do they remain in Thailand? How would this work without involving cooperation from the Thai side (I'm not accusing, just trying to understand the MO)?

So you do not see the human rights violation by Thai army in this case? Illegal or not, shooting someone dead over crossing a border is not within human rights.

All the rosewood in the world is not worth a single human life.

You seem to love death, some people do, they are called mentally disturbed people. They think death is easily justified when it is not happening to them or their own family.

In your particular case I am really hoping that karma exists.

Be careful on those roads.
