BANGKOK: -- Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham, owner and director of T-news agency, yesterday became the first anti-government protest leader to be arrested. He was having a meal alone in the Central Lat Phrao shopping complex when apprehended by police.

Sonthiyarn, a former leader of the now-defunct yellow-shirt movement, was charged with sedition and escorted to the Border Patrol Police Region 1 facility in Pathum Thani province, where he will be detained.

His arrest was the first of a protest leader, and also the first under the state of emergency laws.

"I'm not troubled by the arrest, as my roles in the anti-government movement were protected by the Constitution," he said shortly after beIng arrested.

Assistant police chief Pol Lt Gen Winai Thongsong said Sonthiyarn did not resist arrest when confronted by the police while he was dining.

"He is entitled to request a temporary release through his lawyer, but the final decision on whether it would be granted would rest with the police," he added.

Tarit Pengdith, a member of the government's anti-protest operations unit, the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO), said Sonthiyarn was the second-most important protest figure after core leader Suthep Thaugsuban.

Tarit described Sonthiyarn as one of the brains behind the running of the entire anti-government movement, while also managing financial aid and other assistance from its sponsors.

"He also acts as a contact in dealing with groups of individuals who support the movement behind the scenes," Tarit added.

"Sonthiyarn is also a key sponsor himself. His name is also on the list [of sponsors of the rallies] to be made public today," said Tarit, who is also head of the Department of Special Investigation.

Sonthiyarn's initial detention lasts seven days, and can be extended seven days at a time but not more than 30 days. The first report of his arrest must be sent to a court within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, a People's Democratic Reform Committee leader, Sathit Wongnongtaey, vowed to obtain temporary release for Sonthiyarn. He said he learned that the CMPO was now planning to seek arrest warrants for pro-PDRC academics who spoke on rally stages.

"These academics have done nothing wrong. The CMPO's plan to arrest them is an act of intimidation, which threatens people's rights in a blanket manner, as a scare tactic," he said.

Arrest warrants have been issued for 19 rally leaders, including Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary-general of People's Democratic Reform Committee, for their involvement in the rallies, but Sonthiyarn is the first to be detained.

Earlier, caretaker Labour Minister and CMPO director Chalerm Yoobamrung said Sonthiyarn was the only wanted leader residing in a condominium.

The 18 other leaders had taken refuge at the protest sites, where they were being shielded by protesters, he said.

Other "stars" of the rally are also facing arrest, Chalerm said.

"I want to tell Mr Suthep that I will no longer tolerate what he has done, laying siege to many government offices and chasing away officials who wanted to work. That's unacceptable, and I will use the law to handle the situation," he said.

Yep.... Big purge is now on.

3 months to make the first arrest, only about 79 more to go.

I think that will be the only one they will get and nothing will happen to him anyway, he will be out again on April 2nd, then will sue the PTP and will win in court and make a pretty penny out of this in compensation.

The others will now just make sure they take a bunch of guards with them. Simple as that really.

Wonder how many millions have been wasted on these crack arrest teams and all the frills of Chalerm's bullshit.

The protesters should have arrested those 2 undercover cops yesterday and held them in a secret location and bargained for their release. After all... It's a state of emergency, for all they know, these may have been terrorists... they probably were.

that may actually happen ,i wouldnt be surprised if there was not some retaliation for this by the PDRC

which may or may not include illegal acts such as kidnapping or violence towards PTP members /supporters

and their famalies

someone already suggested kidnapping the generals daughters if the army stepped in months ago .....

Are you suggesting that the planned kidnapping of the general's daughter was done by the PDRC? Why would you include possible actions of one group with the plans of another much more violent (and oft times deranged) political action group?

there is not much rational thinking in thailand by either group that i can see ......

just saying this action might provoke a reaction is all ....

What a victory for the government! They arrested someone who wasn't even bothering to hide, having a meal by himself in a shopping mall. They got a single leader after months of protests! Chalerm must have gone into an alcoholic coma with all the celebrating! Well done! clap2.gif

Arrest warrants were only issued recently and I bet he wished he had hid like the rest of them atm. You really think any government in the world will put up with these kind of protests ad infinitum once they turn violent and have people running about shooting others and saying the things they have on stage ? ridiculous pipe dream.

Dosnt matter if half this gov belong behind bars or not they arnt going to just sit and do nothing forever, atm its clean up time for the protest leaders and affiliated financial supporters.

58 persons and companies are among a total of 139 names which the DSI will issue warrants for them to clarify their financing.

The first group of 58 names is those the DSI has evidence that they donated over a million baht fund to the PDRC.

He said at first financial transactions of these first group would be halted until they could clarify their financing. He made clear that the DSI did not seize their accounts but just freeze them until clear explanation is given.

Hardly surprising

Yeah, I see the brave Thai police waited until they could get him alone ...

And what exactly is wrong with that? We are approaching the anniversary of the death of two brave police officers who confronted an imbecile with a live grenade at a festival at Nadun, Mahasarakham. I am willing to bet that the average Thai policeman has more balls than you.

He has done nothing wrong. To imprison any of the anti government protestors whilst convicted criminals ( Taksin, Noppadon etc. ) refuse to serve their sentences and relatives who use their position to get their family off ( Chalerm re. his murderous son etc ) and terrorists ( Arisman, Nuttawat, Jatuporn etc. ) are working for government and walking free instead of languishing in prison where they belong, to arrest and detain ANY anti government protestors is gross hypocrisy of the highest order ! Clean up your own house first.

This is my very first post, despite reading TV for more than year.

Despite this miserable operetta at the heart of all this I like to say that I very much enjoy (some) of the incredibly funny, sometimes even brilliant posts here on the forum. Thanks! (This isn't a joke or sarcasm.)smile.png

So you are suggesting that the prior red-shirt threat to seize the generals daughters, dead or alive, will somehow now lead the PRDC to do something similar. I think that's unlikely.

If the police were acting illegally, like taking shots at protesters from a motorbike for instance, can they be subject to a citizen's arrest? Not that there will be any consequences of course.

" He said he learned that the CMPO was now planning to seek arrest warrants for pro-PDRC academics who spoke on rally stages. "

Indeed, the CMPO can only succeed by targeting people who are quite geographically separate from the protests sites, like guest speakers, many of whom will be well known to most expats living in this country from their frequent TV appearances. Some are cultural icons, and I can think of nothing more self-destructive to the CMPO than the public apprehension and detention of these famous, easy recognized, and often publicly loved individuals. During the 1930s and 1940s, the Nazis specifically targeted intellectuals and academics, citing their influence as subversive. Times change, sometimes the labels adopted are creatively nuanced, but the tactics remain the same. These individuals are easy targets for arrest. But their incarceration and sequestered detention will cause this whole situation to explode and will inflame not only those in the PDRC movement but also the Thai public at large, many of whom are completely separate from political opinion, but nonetheless recognize that a very dangerous line has been crossed, and one which will impact on the freedom of all Thai citizens.

Sure keeping the rest of the sheep on their toes.

Many of them must stay with the protest now 24 hours or face arrest when they stray.

No more of this driving in and out to protest. Big step in the right direction is this and there were many arrests last week, and more to come if the Army decide that organising a hit team is a crime in this country.

Chalerm knows how to work them up, get them excited that police might turn up and give the the violence the Army need.... and then he dissapoints them!!

I love seeing them out their failling. It is breaking the financial backs of their support base. Easy to count the crowd this morning outside Central It was ONE. no more, no less... ONE!!!

The're's bound to be large numbers of Democrats and arrogant foreigners crying foul at the inevitable arrests of protest organizers and fund raisers, Many of these are in fact anti-heroes trying to bring down the rights of the majority of the Thai people , Somehow these morons find the intellectual rape of millions of law abiding Thai citizens funny.

The critics should be thankful that Thailand has a Prime Minister that will not use excessive force against her enemies or any of her genuine political adversaries. However you can expect that the PM will use the full force of Thai Law to bring them to justice. Thereafter the Thai Judiciary will be expected to give Thailand's anti-heroes,on conviction, fines, custodial sentencing, or ban them from public office..

If you are continuing to protest illegally (Occupying or damaging public offices, or utilities) I sincerely advise you to go home to your families without delay.

So off center - like a lot of your posts. That most if not all of the current caretaker government belong behind bars is the root cause of the problem. Not many countries would tolerate a government that openly lies, cheats, acts illegally, refuses accountability and transparency, makes false promises, holds itself above the law, encourages people to disobey the law (when suits) and disrespects parliamentary procedures. Remember PTPs blatant attempts to censor social media and the press last year, even threatening "legal" action if you liked a post on social media that they didn't. They have zero interest in reform or reconciliation. Their only interest is to clear their leader of all criminal charges and conviction, past, present and future and to create a scenario where they can govern unchecked and unopposed. The straw that broke the camel's back was the sneaky amnesty bill linked with trying to ram through the 2.2 trillion off budget and free from parliamentary control.

They have indeed lost the legitimate mandate to govern, even before the results of the numerous corruption probes are known. A decent party would have resigned to show some honor. But, as we know honor, ethics, and the truth are not familiar to them.

This does not suggest all the actions of all the protesters are right either. Some have their own agenda. But, we know DSI are a tool of the government to suppress opposition and dissent when required. This smacks of intimidation, revenge, and some desperation. PTP's M.O. is to push to the limits and if no reaction push more. They over pushed and created the mess themselves. Arrogance, stupidity, contempt for the people and laws, all ingredients. The latest jaunt by some to meet the real boss in Myanmar, if true, would suggest the allegations they are ruled, led or very influenced by a convicted fugitive criminal have some credence.

Not many countries would have tolerated this behavior for so long. A sad reflection of the legal system when a very senior police office openly cavorts outside the country with a convicted fugitive wanted to face other more serious charges.

How anyone can trust anything this regime say or do is baffling, given their track record. To suggest they are interested in democracy, upholding the law, social reform and change to benefit all is just too laughable.

I love how a democratic anti-government protest gets slandered to make it look like a 'mob' rather than a democratic moverment. Just to justify it's prosecution I guess.

BTW 11:56AM did Tarit/DSI already make the list of sponsors known?

That would be the same caretaker PM/DM, party list number 1 candidate, that is so currently conspicuous by her absence? Not that unusual of course.

She has shown great indifference to the plight of the farmers, the mismanagement of the rice scheme, the increasing corruption, the HR issues, and faces numerous probes herself. I'm sure she is more worried about clinging to power and avoiding more issues coming to light should a new government inherit the books. But, where is she in all this? Declares a SOE at a time when all her supporters claim the protesters have dwindled to insignificance and then does a disappearing act herself.

Let's see if how certain politicians and their spouses all fair under the corruption probes. There may indeed be some convictions and sentences.

So what if they got one guy out of how many leaders in how many months? it's hardly a victory when there are so many more. If anything, the other leaders will be more careful. This fella will be the first and last leader they arrest without using any force.

They got one careless guy out of how many protest leaders, after how many months? This will be the first and last protest leader they get so easily. The police got lucky.

People like you like to think the support for the protests is dying out and yet they're still out there and the Poo government can't do anything about it. If the numbers were so small, why don't they order the police to swoop in one night during Suthep's nightly speeches and arrest him? Discount them all you want but the smaller you make them out to be, the more ineffectual the government looks because even with their support supposedly dying out, the Shinawatras still can't touch them,

People will continue to exercise their right to protest until this government goes down and the PM takes the first flight out to Dubai.

If propaganda was fact Mr Pipkins would be a clear winner.

there were many arrests last week, and more to come if the Army decide that organising a hit team is a crime in this country.

Many arrests of who? Street-walkers? The rest of the sentence makes no sense. It's Chalerm - that paragon of lawlessness - who wants to organise hit teams similar to those his offspring organised to terrorise night-club patrons some time ago.

Chalerm only knows how to get himself worked up - with the aid of ear medicine.

And then the 'logic' takes over:

Many of them must stay with the protest now 24 hours...........count the crowd this morning outside Central It was ONE

Yes, it's so easy to hide in a crowd of one! wink.png
