Cost effectiveness of well vs. municipal water supply.

I live on my own in Hua Hin and it is now quite unusual to have any city water at all. I have water delivered about once a week, by the Cha-am Fire Service if I happen to be in when they come around, and by a private contractor when I am desperate. In the occasional month when I actually received the city water, it was very cheap, only about 75 baht per month, whereas having water delivered has cost me as much as 1600 baht in the worst month (private contractor) but more usually about 1000 baht. When no city water is delivered at all I am still charged 35 baht which I believe is the standing charge. No great deal, but a bit annoying, particularly if I do not catch the meter reader and I have to go to the Cha-am office to pay the bill..

Neighbours who have had 80 metre deep wells installed share the service and the 160,000 baht installation cost with perhaps two other neighbours, but each then has to buy a filter costing around 20000 baht, depending on its size and specification. I have been unable to participate in any of my immediate neighbour's schemes and the cost of going it alone is a bit prohibitive.

I too live in hua hin two bedroom 3 bathroom house Dustin land 7 , city water very clear shower used four times a day we cook a lot and buy drinking water, my city water bill around 50 baht a month, drinking water. About 45 a month. Where the hell do you get your numbers ????

Where do you buy your drinking water?

I'd like to buy from there too.

On our property there is no govt water or likely to be for a long time. So no real option but to drill. Have been quoted around 40k which seems expensive to me(used to live outside Udon my bore and pump cost 10k there 10 years ago)Spoken to other farangs yesterday and they say 30 - 50k.I think the drillers mostly charge whatever they can get away with locally.Probably best to check with costs of recent thai owner installations to get the going rate.

increased electrical bills for pumping outweigh the money saved on water

Where I live in Pattaya it doesn't matter if well or city water you'll need a pump and if relying on city water some storage facility. With very low pressure for only a few hours a day a pump is essential so the electrical cost would be the same. Pressure is often so low those with >=1 meter high above ground tanks won't fill. I have underground tank and get sufficient water for my needs but larger families don't and are continually buying in. This has been the situation for the 28 years I've lived in the house. Pattaya City Water company should be ashamed of their appalling service.

We buy the twenty liter bottles from the local shop which we exchange and just just pay 15 baht for the water, the bottles can have a 100 baht deposit bit I own three acquired over the years, there are numerous guys who deliver for the same price too. Used this system for several years never a problem, feel free to pm me if you live in hua Hin and Ned help.
