BMA Executives Skip Work For Political Reasons

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Governor of Bangkok and other high-ranking administrative officials said they would skip work until political tension subsides.

Ms. Tridao Aphaiwong, spokesperson of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, explained in a press conference today that the decision to file leaves was meant to demonstrate political stance of the BMA executives.

The officials who would submit the casual leave include Deputy Bangkok Governor, Chief Adviser to the Governor, Adviser to the Governor, and Assistant Secretary to the Governor, Ms. Tridao said, adding that their leave would be immediately effective today.

According to Ms. Tridao, their leave of absence is intended to pay tribute to the loss of lives after the government launched crackdown against the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) protesters on 18 February.

The crackdown claimed the lives of 4 civilians and 1 policeman. More than 65 people are reported injured.

The officials argued that the rights to peaceful protest are protected by the Thai Constitution, while the excessive use of force is against the rule of laws, Ms. Tridao said. She noted that the violence also occurred in areas under BMA responsibility.

The spokesperson said the BMA executives would resume work "once the political tension is eased". She did not specify when.

However, the Bangkok Governor, Mr. Sukhumbhand Paripatra, would be working as usual.

"In case of the Governor, in order to avoid allegation of misconducts, he would make a sacrifice by resuming his work as usual, but he would only work during the office hours," Ms. Tridao said, adding that the BMA will daily assess the situation to evaluate their further measures to prevent the loss of lives and restore the public safety.

It is reported that the group of BMA executives have already met with the Bangkok Governor yesterday at Suan Phakkard Palace to inform about the leave. The Governor reportedly approved their leaves out of respect for the officials′ rights to exercise political opinion.

Nevertheless, Mr. Sukhumbhand reportedly instructed the officials to assist the public as much as possible in every way.

It cant be all that bad the Australian Travel warning only states, to be carefull where you go in Bangkok, or words to that effect and do not travel down south.

So the south obviously is more dangerous than Bangkok which must be a storm in a teacup. I thought there were more deaths and injuries in Bangkok than what happened down south in the last week, or they are at least on a par.

I was filing paperwork for marriage but guess what thanks to Suthep and his undemocratic party no one is getting paperwork done unless they go in person. The lady told my future wife they have 1000's of envelopes waiting to be picked up by the agency that handles the paperwork not 10's not 100's 1000's. These <deleted> should be fired and replaced. I sympathize with you and the thousands of others that have submitted paperwork to be done which is of great importance. However, if I was one of those employees that were working in one of the areas that I may be shot or maimed or even killed on my way to work because of the protests, barricades or whatever. I would stay home too.

They could have and should have had the paperwork sent to a safe area or environment with the employees to carry on with the submitted paperwork.

I agree and do not think these people should be put in danger but there comes a time when the "elected" government needs to step up and do something about the disruption. Its not only the people getting married who are suffering from nobody working its the entire system. Chiang Wattana is not only immigration it is many things. How many countries in the west are going to let Federal buildings get occupied and held hostage over 100 days(In the states we call that Congress)? There comes a time when common sense and what is good for the majority needs to happen. Indeed, Chalerm's violent push has disgraced not only this administration, but has also caused revulsion from the administration of Bangkok. Chalerm's go it alone approach has now cost lives, and it has tarnished the image of the country. When reporters reported that the police went in using live ammunition and tear-gas, the Yingluck administration was exposed for what it was. The Chalerm push to retake five protest sites ended with none of them being retaken, and with lives lost and many dozens injured. And all of them Thai citizens. Indeed, they have a right to protest, as have all free citizens. Their right to protest was recently affirmed by the Constitutional Court. They have the right to walk the streets of their own country. And they have the right to protest this administration. Yingluck and Chalerm have stepped on that right, and have no business being in office.

It is illegal for government officers to skip works on political reasons. They should resign or face disciplinary actions. Don't think employers allowed employees to skip works on political reason. However, those who were threatened by the thugs of the dem's PDRC/pcad should receive leniency after investigation.

They are doing it en masse.
