Hi folks, thanks in advance for any advice. My Fiancée and I are visiting and had not intended to stay for more than two and half weeks.

Well she got hospitalized and without going into details she has been discharged but the doctor has grounded her from flying for 30 more days. A quick check with immigration tells me that since we are not married yet her doctors note does not apply to me as a caretaker. She is good for medical extension here and also because she holds dual citizenship.

So I need an extension in a hurry. This was a non-visa, under thirty day visit, so I had just got the exempt visa stamp upon entry. From reading a bit I found immigration will only grant me 7 days for ฿2000. A road trip to Burma gets me 15 and a plane ride could get me 30.

I wanted to check with you folks if there is anything else I should know or explore, do I need to stay in Burma/Laos overnight? Is it a one day (all day I imagine) affair? Or should I inquire with the US consulate?

Lastly, we are staying in Lamphun so Chiang Mai isn't far and we can get reasonable transport from locals we know.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

A border run will give you 15 days, you do not have to stay overnight. You can return to Thailand the same hour. There are companies that have busses running to do just this from places like Bangkok and Chinag Mai. you lave early in the morning and return late afternoon. Since you are in Lamphun you should check Chiang Mai. there are busses leaving from there too. You will want to go to Mai Sai (Chiang rai province).

If you are from one of the G7 countries, you will even get 30 days by land.

You will not be "extended".

By leaving and re entering Thailand you will receive a NEW 30 day visa exempt entry.

A pedant strikes again. It was clear to the OP and anybody else with a miniscule understanding of English what he would get.
To the OP, if you are driving Mae Sot may be an easier border option from Lamphun.

No it is not.

Just head up the highway to chiangrai and go a further 69 km to MaeSai.The Road is a much less windy and hence faster route on good multilane road all the way.

I do not think some people have any understanding of the geography of Thailand.

If you go this way it would be easy to do it by bus. Get an early airconditioned bus to Chiangrai or straight to Maesai if it comes first. If yolu go to Chiangrai then get the Green Bus airconditiond minibus to the border. Cross the border and enter Burma (500baht or $10 note works ssometimes) walk back across the bridge and repeat to return.

From Lamphun it is highway 11 and 1 to Tak and the last time I drove it was it was as good a multilane road as you will find in Thailand. The 80km from Tak to Mae Sot is bendy, but no more so than the Chiang Rai road from Doi Saket to 20kms south of Chiang Mai. So I think it is you that does not have any understanding of the geography of Thailand.

Lamphun MaeSai 270 km direct busses available from Chiangmai.

Lamphun MaeSot 331 km few direct busses.
