Gunfire becomes new norm in Thai capital
BY PAIRAT TEMPHAIROJANA
BANGKOK

(Reuters) - Shots fired by unknown gunmen on Wednesday rattled parts of the Thai capital where anti-government protesters have set up camp for weeks, with small but occasionally deadly bombs and gunfire fast becoming the new norm in the city.

No one was wounded in the shootings in the central commercial area of Bangkok, although five people were killed in weekend violence in the city and the eastern province of Trat, four of them young children.

National security chief Paradorn Pattanathabutr said there had been no reported deaths or injuries in the incidents in the early hours of Wednesday.

"As for the perpetrators, we still don't know who they are," he told Reuters. "Recently we have been seeing more incidents like this happening more frequently ... It is noticeable that there are incidents like this every day."

Perhaps Paradorn can explain the complete lack of police success in apprehending the culprits.

Police are not allowed in by Suthep's guards.

When you read all these articles on gunfire/bombings it is always someone else attacking the protesters that starts it, we are all aware the protest guards are armed but they are armed for their own safety otherwise we would be seeing multiple deaths from the assailants. Doesnt matter how our own tv reds try to paint the picture, the protesters have only ever defended themsleves, there is no shootings etc when they are left alone, it is the other side that is instigating it all yet they are totally immune to the police with no arrests as yet, why is that.

"shootings in the central commercial area of Bangkok" on Wednesday

Is that the best these "journalists" can come up with to pinpoint the location of the shootings? At least they seem to have a better clue of what is happening than the police.

hardly the norm. isolated pockets near the protest sites. the rest of us are living our lives like we always have through coups, protests states of emergency and the like. Bangkok always goes on business as usual despite politics.

The shooting are aimed at the protesters not from within the protest site! So why don't the police stop those shooting at the protesters?

Because if the police try, the guard will beat the police up. Not like it has never been done before.

You know... you have the all these foreign adrenaline junkie journalists that parachute into Bkk in full body armor every few years trying desperately to up stage each other with the most irrational comments and photos that say... "Hey Corporate! I'm your man in SE Asia."

Edited to say... We on the forum ask better questions than the Thai or the foreign press. It's a joke.

In 11 years, never seen, or heard anything remotely like gunfire, etc. Guess I'm lucky- according to Reuters I am living in a war zone...

A Thaksins war against drugs I heard gun fire frequently....And now at least at some celebrations I hear gun fire....And on the rice (or vegetable, don't know) field, still inside Bangkok, they are shooting at the birds almost every day.

The Thai security authorities have no clues. There is a total breakdown with security in Thailand.

You mean the paid guards?

Stop paying them then.

Ah well, no harm done then.

Please read my comment again and try to answer the question. It is not about the police being let into the protest area it is about the police stopping shooters outside the protest area is it not?

In other words, Mr. Paradorn doesn't give a damn... beatdeadhorse.gifbeatdeadhorse.gif according to some of you, another Thaksin lackeye...
