An Everything Electronics Store in Bangkok?

Featured Replies

Does this exist here, like a "Fry's Electronics" in America? I need a hobby & to build a workstation would be my more preferred relax. I'm talking all components in its variety. Logic/motherboard, power supply, chassis, cooling system or fans, controllers & the obvious.

If not here, can I get from either Malaysia or Singapore?

When you go to Phantip, shop around. Some stores are much cheaper than others. I recently bought a Lenovo notebook for 18,200 at Advice on the third floor. Every other shop had only gone down to 21,500 or so. That includes the big stores like Banana, J.I.B and IT City. This afternoon, I walked into a store on the third floor and was quoted a price of 71,000 for a Lenovo Notebook. I said, "You mean 17,000, right?" She said no, the price was 71,000 so I thanked her and walked out.

Luckily you got the answer you need

But a more explicit question would have been better

A store with all the part to build a new computer

or similar

There several stores that sell all of the computer parts individually throughout Phantip. You can pick and choose and bargain for everything you would need to buy a workstation. Good luck!

If you are a complete do it yourselfer, try http://www.invadeit.co.th/

Thanks Whizbane, will research it.

Where would the world be without geeks. And no offense, I was a geek for many years in a past life. Don't want to buy something someone else has built, but build it myself otherwise what's the point to it being a hobby.

Sorry, mis-spelled your call sign.

And if you are looking for electrics not electronics then try the online seller RS Components. They have an English language call-in option and a huge range.

There are so many variants for Lenovo notebooks and it's not always immediately obvious what the differences are, the amount of RAM can vary from one shop to the next. There are Lenovo Ultraboks with a decent size SSD and good graphics etc. that go for over 60k, unless you're saying one shop wanted 71k for the same model another shop was selling for 17k in which case there was clearly a breakdown in communications somewhere.

Also try Fortune at Rama 9 MRT, not so hectic as Panthip plaza and less 'double foreigner pricing'

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293916-d2534849-Reviews-Fortune_Town_IT_Mall-Bangkok.html

Most of the main stores have pricelists on display so there isn't much double pricing going on when you can compare the prices from store to store at Pantip or Fortune. The price differences between the major stores on most popular items are usually very small as they all price check each other on a daily basis to stay competitive.

You also have to be really sure you are comparing like with like. Last cheap laptop I purchased at Pantip, all the stores I checked were selling at the same price but it didn't quite match up with the specs I'd seen on a USA site. Then I found one store right up the back that had just received new stock that had the next step up CPU and double the RAM like I had seen for the US, and it was 1000 baht cheaper, plus they threw in a bunch of accessories without me even asking for a discount. It looked the same as the other shops were selling but the specs of my model weren't even on the .co.th website until a few weeks later, same long model number but with a couple of added letters at the end.

The stores with the flyer with all the prices can set you up with all the components you need. There must be at least a dozen at Pranthip and Fortune.

I've done this before (but not in Thailand) and the thing I learned is to buy all the stuff from one vendor.

Kkerry: The laptop in question COULD have been one of the expensive ultra books. I couldn't find a model number or the specs on the machine that was quoted at 71,000 but it seemed like an awfully high number. By the way, what was the machine with the good specs that you got for a great price? Could the shop possibly have been Advice toward the back on the third floor?

Shop was a nondescript one called Global Solutions according to the invoice, third floor, left side towards the back. It was only a small Samsung laptop but one I knew was available with better specs than all the Samsung shops I'd been in were trying to sell me. I was walking out of Pantip heading home when I stopped to take a quick look at one of those promo displays they often have on the ground floor and there was one small counter with what I was after. They only had one display model so the salesman took me on a walk upstairs to this shop that looked more like a stockroom than a retail store, so I was wondering if I was being set up for something dodgy as the guys at the back of the shop said wait here while we get you what you want. After about ten minutes they produced a Samsung box and the price was cheaper than I expected plus they threw in about 1,000 baht of peripherals without me even asking for any discount. Kept thinking there had to be a catch but there wasn't, all legit and still using it as my travel notebook after upgrading to an SSD.

Best one stop place in Pantip to get an overview of what is available by way of laptops is IT City on the top floor. No pressure to buy and some good bargains on clearance models. You will see expensive models as well as cheap and cheerful.

Thanks. I checked in IT City and found a Y510P model marked down to 34,900. It seems like a good bargain. It has good specs for the price and has a nice backlit keyboard. It would be good as a desktop replacement. It's a little heavy for carrying around. IT City does have a good selection so you can get an idea of what's available. Then there's the odd store that you stumble across (sometimes) that has exactly what you want at a great price. I always shop around a lot to try to find the legitimate bargains.

I do miss the old Radio Shacks, Frys and others.... Nothing remotely similar in Thailand.

But, to the OP, how can anyone forget Panthip? blink.png
