Arrival In Thailand

Featured Replies

I'm finally flying in to stay permanently! Will arrive very late June 21. I should have some free time on the 22nd to possibly meet up with any farang ladies in BKK, preferably fat and middle-aged like me, but I suppose I can't be too fussy. I'll be staying 2 nights before I head home to Isaan.

Don't forget to befriend some Thai women. They can teach you things about the country that it would take decades for an expat to catch on to.

Well I'm certainly middle-aged, and while not fat exactly could stand to lose about 10 lbs...but alas, not in Thailand right now, at work in Cambodia through mid July.

Where in Issan do you live? I'm in Prachinburi (south side of Khao Yai)

Welcome!

No doubt! Will do as soon as I learn enough Thai to have a conversation, or if I find a Thai lady with enough English. Do my two Thai lady friends who both spent 30 years or so in the US count? :o

Ah, my fellow nurse. Glad you're relatively close. I'll be in Nakhon Ratchasima. It's a long drive; I made a Poi Pet visa run my last visit, so I have a pretty good idea of the distance to Cambodia going south. A casual drop-in isn't too likely, but feel free to visit! I'm sort of a recluse, and tend to not go visiting much. Maybe my well-intentioned Thai neighbors will be changing that. They sure tried when I was there before! PM for details on my location.

Wish we could meet up but I will be flying in (very late too, I hate that!) on the 7th and will be out of Bangkok asap, off to see my husband!

If you are ever down my way be sure to give me a pm and we can meet up

Actually I'm closer than the border run as I'm about 30-45 minutes from Kabinburi in the opposite direction from the border...but probably still a good 2 hour trip from Korat. (A more scenic way is to take the road through Khao Yai, it's only another 15 minutes out on the south side of the park.)

I've been looking for someone to go camping/hiking with in Khao Yai itself (not this time of year, obviously -- after the rains stop, also white water rafting there (immediately Novemberish), if your interests run in either of those directions send me a PM (or anyone else interested)...

Cheers

Anyhow sooner or later I'm going to make a trip to Phimai, will PM you when I do...

Don't those activities take place outdoors? As in, in the sun??

Count me out. I will burn in 15 minutes flat without sunscreen, a couple hours with no matter what the SPF. My mother called me a houseplant as a child due to my sun aversion. An aversion heightened by too many evenings of fever, nausea, and headache after too much sun on the occasions when I had no indoor option.

I'll go to Phimai with you, though. I'll bring an umbrella or something, wear long sleeves, and use lots of sunscreen and powder. Not practical hiking or rafting!

It is difficult for us white people in the tropics isn't it? :o

I, too, get headaches and nausea when overheated. I have learned (I should hope so after so long) how to avoid those situations and rarely get so bad anymore. However, when I do feel a heat headache coming on I pop a couple of Tiffy (the wonder drug!) and it usually solves the problem before it gets unbearable.

OK, I'll cross you off for outdoor pursuits...but will follow up one of these days on Phimai!

No, no, that was me at 45 degrees north latitude. I just plain know better than to attempt to spend any long length of time in the sun in the tropics. 4 years in the Philippines taught me that I can do it easily enough. There is always some time of the morning or evening that is relatively cool, especially in a shaded area. My home has a large awning over a back patio and I've had a mango tree planted to eventually shade the front. I just have to pay attention to how long I will be in the sun whenever I go out. Half an hour and I need some shade for a while.

Hi Cathyy, Swampy here.

I'm fat and middleaged and fun too. I will be coming for a visit on June 23rd. I will be located in Sonkla and be traveling around a bit from there. If all goes well, after a month or more in T. I will come back to the US and start packing.

I'm interested in making friends this trip so that when I make the big move I won't feel so alone being in a new place. It's not like moving across town!

Would enjoy hearing from you.

Blessings,

Swampy

sbk, what's a Tiffy?

I also am prone to heat headaches so I have also learned to protect myself but still happens once in a while,

I love wonder drugs :o

"Come to the edge, He said. They said, "We are afraid." "Come to the edge," He said. They came. He pushed them... and they flew."

Guillaume Apollinaire

Tiffy is a cold remedy sold over the counter --it has paracetamol, decongestants and antihistamines. Not sure why it works so well, but it does. My sister has me bring a box back with me every year. Your husband will know what it is, it is in a little green envelope. about 7 baht for 4 tablets.

I love wonder drugs too :o
