I'd like to get some aerial photos of Bangkok and was wondering what the highest (free) place to visit in Bangkok is? And how to get there (BTS etc) Thanks!!

It's not free, but the tallest completed building in Thailand (taller under construction) is Baiyoke Tower II (304 meters) and there is a rotating observation platform on the roof. Last time I went a few years ago the ticket was 300 baht, not that bad if you want to get some good pictures. Look it up on google maps you can walk from the BTS Phaya Thai, BTS Ratchetewi, or the airport rail link

Not the highest, but my favorite view is from the Golden Mountain Temple near Chinatown. Google Wat Saket.

Fairly close to Kao San Road, but still a hike. 20 Baht to climb the stairs and bang on the gongs on your way.

Thanks a lot. I'm fairly wat-ed out at the moment but may give it a look as it sounds cheap enough.

Been here 3 years and I got wat-ed out pretty quickly. Golden Mountain is the only Wat I go back to regularly. Not for the Wat, but for the 360 degree panoramic view from the man made "mountain" that holds the Wat up.

Ah ok sounds pretty good. Take it you can reach it by Chao(?) Prya Express boat?

Don't take the river boat, take the San Saeb Canal boat

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khlong_Saen_Saep_boat_service

The 'pan fah' stop (it is also the end of the line) is like a 2 minute walk from the Golden Mount.

The river boat will work too if that is the only one you can get too, but it is probably a 30 minute walk

Thanks! Where should I take it from? To give you an idea I'm coming from Ratchpruek west of the city so kind of not near anything. The nearest BTS for me is Bang Wa. Where would you recommend catching the BTS (if relevant) from/to?

That boat looks cheap. I like cheap. Is it fairly regular and how crowded does it get? I know the regular river boat gets pretty crowded so it doesn't bother me either way.

Thanks

Oh, if you live there, you shouldn't be taking BTS, river boat, or canal boat. You take the bus. 511 and 79 will go from the southern bus terminal and in to the city and you can just get off at pan fah or democracy monument. So if you can walk to that main road that the bus terminal is on you can get on that for like 15 baht. Or maybe there is a bus that goes directly, ask people near you what bus goes to Khao San Road

Oh and the canal boat is very regular, a couple minutes during rush hour and maybe 5-10 during the middle of the day. It gets VERY crowded in the morning and after work, so much that you might not be able to get on and have to wait for another boat. During the day it is almost empty though

Ok cool yeah can get to Khao San no problem. And know where Democracy Monument is. So is the wat near there then? Just having trouble understanding where it is. Is there any Soi reference? Say for instance I'm walking away from main road with my back towards Grand Palace which way would it be?
