BANGKOK: -- ASSAILANTS WHO flung a grenade on the fence of rally leader Nataphol Teepsuwan's house yesterday morning intended only to intimidate and not to kill anyone, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) superintendent Pol Colonel Kamthorn Ucharoen said yesterday.

EOD officials identified the grenade as a powerful M19A2 produced by the Thai Army in 1981, he said. He believed all grenades of this type had been ordered destroyed. However, some may have slipped into the possession of wrongdoers, he said.

"The attackers appeared only to [want to intimidate] because the explosive's safety pin was off, but the explosive was wrapped with tape to prevent it from exploding."

He said police would ask Nataphol for footage from the security camera of the house in a bid to identify suspects.

Yesterday's attempted attack on Nataphol's residence was the second in less than a week after a pipe bomb was thrown into his house on February 28.

Meanwhile, Pheu Thai Party deputy spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard denied any link between the government and the grenade attack at Nataphol's house, saying the government did not stand to benefit from such acts of intimidation.

Rally spokesman Ekanat Promphan said the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) suspected the grenade at Nataphol's house was linked with an incident in which Natthapol and his wife Taya blew whistles at Khunying Potjaman Na Pombejra, the ex-wife of Thaksin Shinawatra.

Earlier, assailants hurled a grenade into the office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) compound in Nonthaburi's Muang district on Tuesday night, investigator Pol Lieutenant Mongkol Khaopong of Nonthaburi police station said.

The grenade caused a 30-cm-wide and 10-cm-deep hole in the garden of the office. Mongkol said he suspected the grenade was similar to the MK2 type. Police collected for further scrutiny fragments of the grenade and the pin found on the road.

Pongsawat Kamwilai, 21, a security guard of the office, said he heard a motorcycle driving along the soi next to the NACC office. After the biker accelerated and sped away, the bomb went off.

Meanwhile, two men were arrested at a checkpoint in front of the Pheu Thai Party headquarters on Phetchburi Road for illegal possession of firearms.

Bundit Sakulbongkarn, 42 and Ekachai Polpakdi, 34, were driving a BMW when they were flagged down by police.

Police found two pistols, a .32 calibre revolver and a .38 calibre, 24 bullets, two bullet-proof vests, three teargas masks, whistles and identity cards of PDRC security guards. The two men were taken to Makkasan police station for further questioning.

The two men refused to give any statement to police, saying they would give their testimonies in court only and asked not to be photographed or filmed by the media.

They left off what he was thinking " But if PT stood to benefit from the grenade attack, then PT would have been responsible "

All this lobbing of explosives at disparate targets remotely connected to political entities without injuring anyone, is a cheapy way to create havoc. Mayhem and disorder being a necessary condition for the coup-mongers, thereby clearly indicating the source.

Their problem however, is that everyone sees through this facade, and it isn't gaining the traction the coup-mongers are hoping for. Even when the the media dutifully provides supportive solemn, phonily earnest and deadpan reports about them.

Poor babies!

Your theory is pretty much similar to the theory I have about the endless attack on these threads by certain posters who can neither face the facts nor accept that any other individual might have an alternate view to theirs.

Most people can see through the facade and whilst it is slightly amusing at first, it certainly wears out fast.

Talk about poor babies, indeed.

Logic understandably fails with PTP Spokesman/Red Shirt Anusorn as he professes he can't sort how intimidating an anti-government protester might benefit the government.
If the Red Shirt is going to deny a link, he needs to come up with something more logical as the reason.

Both sides could have a motive for such an attack. It could be genuine intimidation against a protest leader or it could as you say be an attempt to make the government look bad.

Since there is a long and clear trend of intimidation I'd lean that way, but really wouldn't put it past either group. I don't think jumping to conclusions is helpful, we know games are being played.

Of course you intentionally leave out the attacks that have hurt and killed people. Better to pretend that didn't happen because it's harder to fit it into your propaganda, right?

For those that have been hurt or killed in these repeated attacks, he feels his last comment applies to them.

"Poor babies!"

We do not know for certain who has been lobbing the grenades at the protesters.

It could be a group of government supporters who are trying to intimidate the protesters.

It could be a group who support the protests and want to ferment a coup.

It could be a more mainstream protest group who were trying to get the army to protect the protest sites.

The early grenades caused very little damage or injuries which would have required some planning.

The day after the grenade killed the children in Bangkok a protest guard was found dead under a bridge, maybe that was a punishment for missing.

So the old former ex of thaksin is gagging for bigger pranks on her next time around then, if she is intelligent enough to contemplate that?

Might have to add on to YL's northern bunker spaces...don't know for sure that she hired it up, but I know who she is, what she is capable of, and the behavior of her ex and his hired hitmen he used. Regardless, they're just fueling the fire; only they are fortunate that their opponents are less violent.

Ok so a bomb that did not go off and then a grenade that was taped so it couldn't explode. Why go to this extreme and not cause any damage. 2+2=?

The grenade spoon was taped, but the pin was pulled. It's possible that the person who threw it didn't remember to remove the tape at the moment of the attack or didn't know that just pulling the pin would be enough to make it go off.

Seems strange to me that they would make the grenade "safe" by taping the spoon lever but still remove the pin, rather than intimidation, it may be an actual attack botched by an inept terrorist wannabe.

Ok: day after that guy blew a whistle in her face, she was arrogantly pissed off about it..and, well, long behold- just an everyday occurrence that a grenade is tossed into his residence...was santa claus upset that there was no chimney? Well, the red color clothes may be correct...

When it quacks and waddles....you know the rest.

Since when do police find the gov't supporters with anything?

It is disappointing but hardly surprising. Look at their leader for example. Suthep - stubborn to the bone and unwilling to negotiate like an mature adult... its just like any other business or organization really. The leader sets the rest of the tone for these poor babies.
