A component of the United Kingdom’s vocational educational system, BTEC HND courses have been designed using input from commerce and industry to meet the United Kingdom’s requirements for a skilled and competent workforce. Though it is artistic in nature, a career in music is a career nonetheless, and without the prerequisite skills and knowledge it is difficult to succeed in what is a highly competitive arena. The BTEC HND in Music offers a pragmatic approach to acquiring the skills required succeed in a position where musical skills are required.

The first semester of the course looks at music notation and investigates band rehearsal and performance issues alongside the development of music performance skills. In the second semester the course goes into creative arts research skills and critical music listening alongside keyboard skills development. In semester 3 the course goes into music in context, singing techniques and styles, and managing a creative business, as well as considering song writing techniques and skills. In semester 4 the course considers music technology and new media technology. In the penultimate semester the course investigates personal and professional development, planning for public performances, and studio recording and engineering. In the final semester the course looks at issues related to the preparation, the process and the production of creative arts.
