affirmation to marry

Featured Replies

can you get the affirmation to marry certificate the same day from the british embassy?

3 years ago....yes.

The affirmation to marrry then has to be translated into Thai and certified by the MFA in Laksi before you can get married.

Yes Affirmation is done very quickly,, translation can be done easily near the embassy, but you need MFA stamp too.

Most translation companies will do the MFA certification for a small additional fee. When I got married we had them do it and then EMS it to us.

If you do the MFA certification yourself, you have to go to Chaengwattana and wait in a huge queue and they make a big performance of making you wait in another queue to request experess service (get there in the morning and get it back at 3pm) for which you have to pay extra anyway.

Best to get the translation agency to do it. That way they have to deal with any corrections demanded by the MFA which means a re-submission. These corrections are very frequent and usually for ridiculous reasons. If the vice-consul who signs the thing is Thai make sure you find out how to spell the name in Thai or the translator will just make it up and the MFA, which has a list of accredited v-cs and their signatures will reject it if wrong - happened to me.

Basically, don't plan to do this on too tight a schedule or you might end up disappointed.

How long is the affirmation to marry(uk embassy) valid for?

I can also attest that the MFA part is a huge pain in the ass. One whole day for just that (and that's with the "express" service). My wife and I got the afirmation pretty easily from my embassy in the morning (US not British, so no advice there), and immediately took it to a translation service. For some reason, the affirmation boiler-plate document, of which they have probably seen thousands of times, took several hours to translate (basically my name and address). We got it back completed late that same evening.

Next day, off to MFA, bright and early. Have to queue for an hour to get a number, then wait for number to be called to submit documents, then wait for number to be called again to pay, and I think maybe one more time for something... At every step they don't tell you when you will be done, or whether there is another step coming before they will actually be checking/stamping your document. Have your girlfriend ask if possible. We finally figured out that it would be a while - so we left for a very long lunch and came back - still had to wait another hour and finally our number was called to pick up our stamped document. I think we were out of there are at around 4pm. It was a long day of fun fun bureaucracy.

How long is the affirmation to marry(uk embassy) valid for?

Three months has been mentioned before. I would prefer to say 30 days because it could well depend upon the Amphoe you go to.

Most translation companies will do the MFA certification for a small additional fee. When I got married we had them do it and then EMS it to us.

Could you give me a ball park figure of how much they charge for MFA certification?

Also the name of translation companies who provide this service would be most appreciated.

Thanks

MFa certification is 400 baht normal service or 800 baht for the express service (same day). For 65 baht they send the document to your home by EMS, so often there is no need for express service.

A translation agency normally costs 300 to 400 baht, for a fee they will also take care of the certification at the MFA for you.

I cannot recall what the fee was for the MFA part was it has been a long time since I had it done. But I can assure it was well worth the cost.

I am sure any of the translators listed here will do it. I have used number 5 and was always happy with their service. http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/translators_photographers.pdf.

Can I get this Affirmation in Canada, bring with me and have translated here ???

I already have with me here a copy of my divorce, stamped and sealed, from the courts.
