Best Burgers In Thailand

Have to rave about this place. Read about Woodstock on Thonglor Soi 13 in Metro magazine recently and decided to try it out last sunday... The absolute best burger I have had in over 3yrs of living in Bangkok. I've been back twice since sunday, and its been amazingly consistent as well (everyone who lives here knows how hit and miss even the favourite of restaurants/stalls/eateries can be). Great service as well, enjoy! :o

this sounds great and I shall attend when next in BKK. You obviously are quite satisfied so that we could say that the quality of the ground beef is tip - top? Please describe the bun arrangement (lettuce, tomato and pickle) and available condiments...

(you are advised that any burger misrepresentation on this forum is punishable by death)

Unless Woodstock has drastically changed the recipe I would bet the OP is not an American. I expect my hamburger to be 100% beef and not taste like spicy sausage. What they call a hamburger could have been any kind of meat because I certainly couldn't taste the meat. In fact I couldn't even eat the sandwich. :o

I went to a new place at the weekend near Khao San road - its called Oh My Cod! owned by a Brit and they do all sorts od western stuff. Fish and Chips (far better than the offshore!!), Full breakfasts, Pies and Baked Potatoes... I had Cod and chips with mushy peas... really good. My mate had a burger and was raving about it, had all the extras, cheese, dill pickle tomato...i will try next time. Cant remember the name of the road the place is on but its next to the temple which is opposite the police station...:o

Can't trust those Euro tastebuds! :o

After speaking with one of the owners on my last visit, I was assured that *everything* is made fresh on site (buns, burger patty etc). I'm not american no, but I did live there for 18 months and I do know what a good burger is. Try it out then tell me if you've found better in Thailand or even south east asia.

To be really specific, they use a top quality beef mince that doesn't taste anything like a spicy sausage.

Give it a try next time your bangkok Gary... and let us know what you think.

The other factors that make this place good are pool tables and free jukebox (and the jukebox has actually been updated recently!!).

I've always liked the burgers and atmosphere of Woodstock when it was at Nana Plaza so will have to make a trip to the new one when I'm in Bangkok.

No misrepresentation, I promise!! :D

The burger format is as follows: Beef patty with melted cheese on the top and lettuce/tomato on the side to put on the burger at your own discretion. There is mustard and ketchup available on the tables and the list of extras for your burger is extremely long (3 types of cheese etc, *including* monterey jack cheese).

Once again, enjoy :o

Next time I'm in Bangkok I'll try it again. If it's not any good, I'll hide the remains under you car seat. :o

Do they still have the one in Ao Nang, Krabi?

Never been in BKK, but went to the one in Krabi a couple of times when it was still open (been closed for a while since the owner passed away) and the burger was OK, really nothing special. Mexican / Cajun food on the menu was a bit better, though still not as good as the Real Thing...

what kinda buns? plain or sesame seed? toasted or not?

best burger ive had to date was in pattaya...'Hamburger Denmark ' go figure.

The best burger I've ever had in Thailand was at Hamburger Denmark, but that was many years ago when they had a big take-out restaurant on the top floor of Royal Plaza. Things could have changed a LOT! :o

The woodstocks burgers are great, but their new location is too far away to interest me and they no longer offer the excellent German wheat beer they used to tap from kegs when they were in Nana. One tip for woodstock: try the chicken parmigiana sandwich! That is their signature meal in my opinion!

There are a couple other places that gives woodstock a run for its money on burgers. Steak 1 offers the most gigantic bacon cheese burger you will find and it is just 200 baht. Irish Xchange is good sized and a great flavor, "build your own" ingredients, and they ask how you like it cooked which is the only place I've run across that does that.

This reminds me of a recurring incident at the Greyhound restaurants.

I eat an Elvis burger there twice a month or so. I always have to ask for "Moos-tahrd nit noy" to be brought to the table.

They always give me about 1/4 of a normal jar for a mustard serving or enough for about 6-10 hamburgers, conservatively estimated. This happens even when I tell them only a bit, and emphasize it by showing/telling them 1/2 of the ketchup dish, etc. My wife has also repeated the request in Thai and emphasizes it but to no avail.

They must be chewing into the owners profit by giving the mustard away but I guess it is the owner's fault for not trainig the servers/chefs. Mustard is not cheap in Bkk.

I think Greyhound has a thing about mustard. I ask for 'mustard' and I just get blank looks. I ask for 'moose-tard' (with a hard accent on the last syllable) and it's 'no problem.' This has been the case for the nearly ten years I've been going there, but it took me a while to crack the code. I guess I'm a slow learner.

By the way, I have to dissent from the general opinion here about Woodstock burgers. Bland and forgettable, in my view. When I tried them, even the manager came over and admitted they weren't much. he said they were still trying to get them right.

Go to The Big Mango Bar in Nana Plaza. Much more pleasant place than you might imagine and, for my money, absolutely the best burger I have ever eaten outside the USofA. A couple of nights ago, I'd even have to say their effort produced one of the best burgers I have ever had anywhere.

I’ve seen the same magazine article, and was in the neighborhood today, so I gave Woodstock’s a shot. My overall impression, while favorable, was not quite as orgasmic as the OP’s. While it is a good burger that uses high quality ingredients, other than the presentation, the burger wasn’t that exciting. IMHO, it is not the best in Thailand, or even Bangkok for that matter. There were some other interesting things on the menu that looked good, so I may go back, but not for the burger.

OK, the detailed burger review. I went for Monterey Jack cheese burger. The best part of this burger is presentation. It comes on a large wooden steak board, with coleslaw in a center dish, fries to one side and burger to the other. The lettuce, tomato, and onion are on the side and the burger comes plain with the condiments on the side as well. The patty has a slightly smaller diameter than the bun, but is still a good size. The beef is not bad, but a little “meat loafie” for my taste and is fried not char broiled. The bun is more like a dinner role. It has rosemary baked in, which gives in a nice aroma. By itself, it’s good bread, however it over shadows the beef. It also makes for a very vertical burger that you need to stretch your mouth out to eat. The fries where good, kind of a medium cut steak fry.

Ambiance/service: I came in at an odd time, about 2pm and a Friday, and I was the only customer, so it’s hard to judge the atmosphere. Good music at a reasonable volume. The décor was new and tastefull, with a good use of dark and light materials in the classic bar theme. The service was good, but like I said, they weren’t very busy. She did make a point of asking me how I like the food, which is something you don’t hear to often here.

Putting things into context (my personal biases): Now the same article that lauded Woodstock’s also panned my favorite burger joint, the Big Mango Bar. I’ve spend a fair about of time in the Bay area were the boys from the Big Mango are from, and I grew up on the West Coast (by at a more Northern Latitude), so we have similar ideas of what a burger should be. It has the a higher fat content than the average Bangkok burger, as a proper burger should, and is char broiled on a properly seasoned grill. The guys have done there home work and have created a great representation of a beach concession burger. Good music, friendly service, and surprisingly good prices. My Woodstock burger, fries, and Tiger worked out to 340bt, the same thing at Big Mango’s (during happy hour) is only 165bt.

I have spent a lot of time in Northern California and the food is great there.

Where is the Big Mango Bar? :o

The location is good or bad depending on you point of view. The Big Mango is in Nana plaza, 2nd floor. Take the escalator on the right of the entrance, at the top keep turning to you right 180 degrees and then straight about 10 feet. Once inside, it’s just a bar and pool hall, quite tame compare to the other venues at the location. Oh, and they have free WiFi.

sounds like the place that I know run by a guy named Nigel(second floor is first floor in europespeak). If so I had an excellent burger there...all the more appealing as the ambiance was unique...a quiet and relaxed place situated in the middle of the NEP riot. The host Nigel attentive and making sure your burger is just right...

Highly recommended for the burger cuisine, the service and the laid back atmosphere...might be a good venue for a future TV pissup...with a good view of the activities below...

I was there in early March this year...the place is right on an' really worth a visit...just look up and to the right when entering the NEP portal...

The Big Mango is a place I had never heard of and I gave it a shot recently. I would never have stumbled upon this place on my own as it has got to be the most conspicuous place in the whole plaza. I found the burgers very good, but hesitate to swear by them as the best. But certainly they should be mentioned in anyone's top 5. The value for money I found excellent which always makes the food taste better as well. The layout of the bar was good and they blew just enough AC to keep the edge off the heat even though it is open. Nice beer selection and hey, they serve beer Laos! How about that--first time I've seen it in Bangkok! The only minor annoyance is I had barely sat down before being propositioned to buy round of vodka shots for a bunch of the girls. Is it customary for customers who order a meal to just dump 500 baht on people they've never seen before? No big deal, they were friendly enough and easy enough to say no. Anyway, a good find. Nice to know there's good food in the plaza after woodstock departed.
