AleG
The Army had guns, why didn't they defend themselves? Usual Thai craven behaviour ... Keep calm and check your facts. The soldiers at these checkpoints are NOT armed..... And it wouldnt be prudent to defend a check-point with force against protesters. Its just a check point, not a military base... no need to defend it with guns. The Military did the right thing, retreat and let them take it, its not a strategic value point and not worth spilling blood over it This of course leads to the question of why did the Red Shirts wanted to dismantle the checkpoint at the risk of initiating a confrontation with the Army?

Cricketnut
The check point should be reestablished immediately. A public announcement should be made by K.P. that anyone trying to dismantle the checkpoint again will be prevented from doing so by any and all necessary actions by the army personnel stationed at the checkpoint. If these red idiots can not read between the lines then so be it. They won't do it simple... fab4
Can't wait for K. Yingluck's comment on this one as the defense minister The redshirts are her Achilles Heel. No wonder she's limping. Well abhisit can join her, having confirmed what most people knew all along - He does have a chip on his shoulder. Somewhat off topic and trying to divert, I'd say. As for the caretaker MoD Yingluck I'm sure she'll say that all sides should respect the law and that she asked the army to be more careful with it's equipment. It's called humour, rubl. Popular Post MGP
" As a result, the Army had to relocate the checkpoint from the spot" An useless police force and an army that let their bunkers be overrun by Redshirt terrorists, and this we pay taxes for! How many unarmed soldiers do you think would have been at the check point ? 4 or 5 at the most. How do you expect them to stop a mob of red thugs who turn up ? They were right to move away and let the thugs have the bunker, if they hadn't they would have undoubtedly been beaten up and possibly killed. These types have already shown they are ready to bash anyone who they think might oppose them, even monks. This is just another provocation in Thaksins desperate moves to get the army to stage a coup. they have radio and should be prepared for assaults of the terrorists. Are they not allowed to fire in self defense? Do they not have automatic weapons? I guess they are confiscated now edited for typo correction Sweatalot, the soldiers at the checkpoints are unarmed, and there are no weapons kept at the "bunkers". Only medical kits. What the Red Shirts terrorists want, under the command of their supreme leader Thaksin Shinawatra, is to provoke the army to fight back with a crackdown. They are eagerly waiting for a coup because that would be the perfect curtain of smoke for all the corruption, disrespect of law, and abuse of power of their government and allies. Then they will have the perfect excuse to create a bath of blood followed by populist elections, like in 2010. And after that, wash all the crimes with a revival of the Amnesty Bill.

If you think the percent of cry offs would make any difference your mistaken. The crackdown should have been the police. How do YOU know K.Prayuth clearly wants a coup ??? Time is Thailands friend, The courts etc.---But the reds are stupid if they think they can intimidate the Prayuths army. Beat up one old monk on a cane and they think they are invincible. I am afraid they under estimate the support they have. Even in the red shirt's they are starting to squabble. If they are so strong in the North how come they are on a recruiting drive to raise 600,000 soldiers? Or sign up 200,000 for another red shirt based organization? If they were strong in Issen they would not need a drive to sign them up. I had a talk with are manager last night. He will vote for any one the PTP puts up all though he doesn't think much of the red shirts and agreed with me that Yingluck was not capable of doing the job. She has some bad advisors. Won't be long and the PTP will have to condemn the red shirts or lose the rest of there support. Like I said are manager is PTP but he is getting fed up with the red shirts. As for the Army staging a coup the only people against it are the red shirts. The PTP could then save face by not stepping down and the PDRC would be happy to see Thailand given a chance to reform it's government. There would be a lot more rose's handed up to the crew in the tanks. The soldiers who are red shirts are getting a better view of what is happening and would be less likely to support the rabble rousing ones. After all if there is to be a coup it will not be the PTP or PDRC who start it. It will be the actions of the red shirts.

northernjohn
And some 'intellectual heavyweights' continually criticize Thai army for being heavy handed. Get some perspective. Try demolishing U.S or British Army security checkpoint mate and see what happens. It seems to me that Jatuporn and his followers want blood to be spilled once again. No doubt about it. They do not have an intelligent reason to put foreword for their existence so they want to have more of their members killed to get them attention. Play up the emotions when intelligence is on holiday if indeed it was ever there. The rate they are going if the Army doesn't stop them the PTP will have to publicly announce that they do not support them in any way. Failure to do so will just make them look like thugs also.
