Which house am I going to rob? The one with the farang.

The nitty gritty. My dog does not know I am a Farang. She is my friend. (remember the advice, "if you want a friend get a dog." I did.) My house is not the biggest or the one with the most visible stuff. I think that the crook will choose the house which will get him in and out the quickest with the most stuff.

I've been here long enough not to have a Farang complex anymore. Even the above survey says about 50% have never been robbed and I suspect that is closer to 90% if you made the survey mandatory.

I figure iron bars and a big safe reduce my risk 30% and the dog 50%. So if I stood a 1 in 10 chance of being robbed I have cut that by 80%.

One thing I can say for sure is the dog is not increasing my chances of being robbed. And her elimination of venomous snakes and scorpions more than pays for her food and the attention she requires.

Not only could a burglar rob me of money but a pit viper could rob me of my life or fingers depending on circumstances. In any event cause me a lot of pain.

And it's nice to know there is one thing in your life that loves you and that you can trust.

As you said, you have to tell the kids the dog will bite. So you have a potential neighborhood menace 365 days per year whether you are at home or not. I home you have good homeowner's liability coverage in case the dog should ever for any reason get out.

Maybe you want to tell me about the homeowners liability insurance that you have in Thailand? Name of company and stuff covered and how much you pay.

Whilst the discussion about dogs is fascinating and useful to many, can I just point out that the subject of the thread is burglary and a female poster in post 49 went to great lengths to post her personal experiences which include her being raped by the intruder!

I think it took a lot of courage and thought for that poster to recall those things into print and that your banal diatribe about dogs obscures that effort,

without recognizing its value or humanity.

Just saying, in case you were ever worried about being caught in the trap of being self centered and uncaring!

Yes unfortunately, I think that many posters missed that contribution to the thread. Quite an amazing story, really.

I worry about my wife a lot less being home alone because of my dog. Maybe look at yourself. Dogs have been protection for women alone for years in more countries than Thailand. I think the subject of the thread is have you been burgled and how safe do you feel. If you are a lady alone a couple of German Shepherds will make you feel much safer.

I don't have a liability policy but I don't keep a dog which could bite a kid with 400 pounds pressure if it ever accidentally got out of its confines.

But I am writing from the perspective of someone without any dog but has to put up with neighborhood dogs including -- until recently -- a Rottweiler that would bark aggressively if you just happened to pause your motor bike in the street in front of their gate.

we have just had some local electricity board,or tessaban or obotor put an electric post at the back of our property 10inches from the boundry wall and 2ft.from our kitchen roof.there is plenty of room for it to go 5ft.from the wall and 10ft from the kitchen roof.we asked them politely and it didn't make a bit difference, they are going to put a sign up saying BURGULARS THIS WAY UP.

as the kitchen is fully alarmed we shouldn't be too conserned but if the alarm did go off it would be me first, then the wife and our beloved last,no bastard burgler is going to put a knife into my dog when I am alive they will have to kill me first.

Your attitude that a dog is a neighborhood menace says it all. You have an agenda other than what would be considered normal in Thailand.

This thread is about how safe I feel and the dog makes me and my wife feel safe.

.. and that you don't give a sh-t about what your neighbors may think. As to what is the norm, all I know in my Thai conversation with the owner who was left to clean up the mess that the dog left on her property, she was glad to see the dog and its owners go elsewhere.

You've already said that one of the reasons you keep a dog is that, if a burglar should perchance into the neighborhood, the burglar will rob your neighbor's homes first. Just the kinda folk I like to have next door.

Burgled twice in Phuket, both times in the night whilst sleeping and incredibly access was gained via a second floor window that I was convinced was inaccessible! The BiB came to out , looked at the window from a distance of six feet and declared it a professional job as there was no finger prints.

Probably a Farang.

I have 2 very large aggressive dogs, I have never been robbed, If you got robbed. you're right , I wouldn't give a sh-t.

Thank you. And if I encountered the robber, before he enters my house, I might say: Here is a bucket of Thai hot pepper juice to splash in the face of and totally disable the 2 dogs next door because -- since he keeps two very large aggressive dogs -- he must have more worth taking.

Who said I don't care about what my neighbors think? 90% have dogs. 10% don't. You relate one experience with dog poop and that replaces common sense about percent of dogs owners in Thailand?

My house is better defended against burglars than my neighbors. OK true. You said that makes me a bad neighbor? My house is cleaner than my neighbors and quieter than my neighbors and better color coordinated and has nicer trees and garden and all those things by your way of thinking would make me a bad neighbor?

From the very top of Thailand to the bottom Thai people own dogs.

You don't like Thai dogs. OK I get that. I saved a Thai street dog and got her neutered and she has a good life with me and in exchange she works for me as dogs have done in Thailand since the beginning of time.

OK TLT -- we can wind this up if you choose. The other guy and maybe you say you keep dogs and you have never been robbed. I have lived here 10+ years now in a fairly rural area without any dogs and have never been robbed. So if you and he want to say that the reason that you have never been robbed is because of your dogs, up to you.

I think just very uncomfortable for most to read we don't know what to say.

I also commend the poster for being so brave.

I think it's obvious that a dog would deter opportunistic thieves as they probably don't carry poisoned meat on them at all times. Whether they came back later and tried to poison your dog is a different matter. What about alarm systems - I don't think anybody has mentioned them yet unless I missed it?

A couple of giant German Shepherds roaming around seems to keep the rif-raf away & at bay! Gentle souls that they are, their bark's enough to persuade anyone to try somewhere else that's easier!

If anybody really wants to break into your property, dogs won't stop them, they will just throw poisoned meat at them.

Guard dogs can be trained not to eat food unless from certain people - my old dog (deceased now) was trained in the UK by a police dog trainer. If someone threw meat at him or tried to hand it to him, he would not eat it (would not even take it into his mouth).

Having said that, an uncle of my wife had 13 dogs in his compound (all untrained soi dog types) and neighbours complained about the noise - police came calling (he wasn't there) they shot 12 of them trying to get from the gate to the house! If noise isn't a worry (like in the sticks) a bullet will take out any guard dog!

Come to my house and try to break in, I'll go to your house and try to break in, guess who will succeed.

what are you gonna do, throw chilli pepper in my face, lol, I always wear a full face motorcycle helmet when I rob places, ( Doh, cameras ) but I will never rob a place with aggressive dogs, too much bother, I'll just go next door.

I know loads of people in Pattaya that have been burgled, none of the had savage attack dogs, my dogs are trained to attack, and they won't stop until the scumbag is dead, I post warnings on my gate in English and Thai, choose to ignore at your own peril.

Gunshots beat a burglar alarm every time.

You win -- I don't know lots of people in Pattaya scumbags or otherwise.

People who have dogs as mentioned in this topic suffer many personality issues and live their lives in fear.

But they claim its just common sense to keep dogs like that in order to prevent a burglary.

Yes, i have had a burglary in my house years ago. When they apprehended the thief the police told my wife that he carried a gun. We were in the house and all in the bathroom bathing our son and ourselves. He came into the bedroom whilst we were in the ensuite bathroom. So we got lucky. It happened at 8 pm. Note to say that it was in a gated community snd other houses got burgled as well.

Dogs are just one method of security in the home or guarding B-52 bombers.

Military and police forces all around the world use dogs for security. World leaders and royalty all over the world own dogs.

Thailand used to host hundreds of US warplanes. Worth billions of dollars. What did they use to guard them? Dogs. Yup - dogs, dogs dogs. If you want security and peace of mind get a dog.

American Journal of Cardiology, researchers followed more than 400 patients after they were released from the hospital after having a heart attack. One year later the pet owners had a significantly higher survival rate than non-pet owners.

I felt more for the burglar or housebreaker ?

A girl broke into my apt ,thro paperthin paneling on door. She had been escorted by security and allowed to wait and keep knocking while they left.

She took a VCR

The CTV recorded her in an out of the lobby

The police were called next time she arrived, I did "know" her.

They showed her the CTV after her denials and while not actually striking her, shoved her roughly during the interrogation.

They then asked me what I wanted to do.

Disliking their rough treatment of her and the possibility of hanging around in police stations and courtrooms I just said "Forget It"

The condo supplied me with a sturdy door FOC.
