BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Friday called on the National Anti-Corruption Commission to treat her like other politicians, saying she was given too short a time to defend herself.

She has been charged with malfeasance for allegedly failing to stop corruption in the rice-pledging scheme.

Yingluck noted that she was charged by the full NACC and that, unlike in other cases, no sub-committee was formed to undertake a probe.

Yingluck also said that the NACC took only 21 days to charge her. Her defence team had asked for 45 days to respond to the charge but the NACC allowed just 15 days.

Yingluck added that during the 21 days of deliberation by the NACC, her team received only 49 pages of documents. A further 280 pages were later received but she was left with just three days to consider them before having to defend herself against the charge.

The NACC Thursday declined to extend the deadline for Yingluck to defend herself. The NACC asked her to defend herself to the NACC on Monday.

"Due to all of these points, I would like to ask the NACC whether it has treated me fairly like other political office holders or not," Yingluc said.

Yingluck said she had yet to consult her lawyers as to whether she would meet the NACC in person to provide an explanation.

She was told first and foremost that if she did not come to hear the charges and evidence against her personally that she would lose some of her rights and denied some documentation that she would otherwise recieve. YL chose not to go herself to hear the charges and intead went north to do PTP campaigning. She sent lawyers there in her stead

Now she thinks they have to give her special treatment even she ignored their initial warning.

Yingluck is a woman on a mission. She is on a mission to discredit the NACC. She is on a mission to stir up hatred among her UDD supporters for the NACC, and she does this fully conscious of all the grenade attacks that have targeted the NACC. It's unconscionable. For a woman who doesn't like to show up to anything, she does a pretty good job of being obnoxious in the face of facts in front of the media. For the hundredth time, the NACC did not take 21 days to charge her. How is the world has Pheu Thai invented this narrative and when will they ever let it go ? The NACC investigation began in December 2012. It has been a fifteen month investigation. She was warned that if she didn't show up a month ago that she would forfeit the full documentation. She was warned repeatedly. She knows that. Her lawyers know that. Guess what ? She didn't show up. What did the NACC do ? The NACC later bent their own rules and gave her the documents. And then in fact further supplemented those. She has been given ample opportunity to address the NACC. She has refused. In fact, she has spent her time admonishing the constitutionally empowered agency through the media every chance she's had. With all the grenade attacks on the NACC, what she is doing is unconscionable and provocative. Either she or her lawyers address the charges on Monday or it is assumed she accepts the findings. Period. It's time for Yingluck to act like the caretaker prime minister she claims to be and not to side and commiserate with those who wish to undermine the legal checks and balances of the independent agencies.

There is no chance that elected politicians will get treated with respect in Thailand. The Ammart run everything here. If they don't like what you say, they will get their poodle courts to prosecute you. You will be sent to prison for several years or you will be kicked out of Thailand.

Athough Yingluck has been elected, what does that matter? She will be found wanting by the poodle courts in some (as yet to be decided) respect. Everyone knows that if you represent Isaan/Lanna your views are worthless. It is the Bangkokians and their poodle courts who run things in Thailand.

She questioned whether the NACC has treated her fairly and in a manner and degree similar to other holders of political positions in the past, referring to the NACC’s refusal to extend the deadline for another 45 days as she requested.

The NACC, in turning down Ms Yingluck’s request, said it has already extended the deadline by 15 days and that the caretaker prime minister would be allowed to provide more evidence or documents in the questioning process.

Ms Yingluck said the NACC normally set up a sub-committee to investigate an allegation after which the conclusion is submitted to the full committee.

“In this case, the sub-committee investigation process was skipped and the NACC spent only 21 days to wrap up its investigation,” she said.

Ms Yingluck said she has received only 49 pages of documents concerning the rice pledging scheme and another 280 pages of documents were just sent to her while she has only three days to prepare for her explanations to the NACC.

“My question is whether the NACC has treated me fairly. I do hope I’ll be granted justice in the process like other holders of political positions,” she said.

She added that she would consult her legal advisers before deciding if she will personally give her clarifications to the NACC on Monday.

She would not comment on a speculation that she would be indicted in the case but said everyone should be treated fairly under the justice system.

Asked if she contemplated taking a break from politics, Ms Yingluck said she hasn’t thought about it yet since various processes are much far ahead but “I’m willing to act in accord with the people’s demand.”

“What we have to think now is what to do next after the Constitution Court nullified the Feb 2 general election. What can we do to let all factions accept the election process and let a general election take place?” she said.

She expressed hope that the Democrat Party, Thailand’s oldest political party, will cooperate with the Election Commission.

Asked whether ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has discouraged the Pheu Thai Party from contesting in the poll if the Democrat Party does not participate, she said decisions belong to Pheu Thai Party executives.

Asked if she would agree if the Shinawatra family refrain from political activity as a resolution to the country’s political impasse, Ms Yingluck said, “You’ve already heard the reply from Mr Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary general of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee.”

She said, “I’m performing my duty today to preserve democracy. I don’t hold on (to power). However, I’m willing to cooperate with whatever the people want that will bring peace to the country.

“You have to ask those who have disrupted many of the processes on whether they agree with it. I’m just part of the mechanism. I believe that various factions want resolutions. We have to discuss and move our country forward under the democratic framework.” (MCOT online news)

Former prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, and former deputy prime minister, Suthep Thaugsuban, have officially acknowledged the charges brought by the attorney general against them regarding the 2010 protest crackdown. However, the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has pushed for an investigation to impeach the two from their political office.

Despite murder charges already being brought against Mr. Abhisit and Mr. Suthep by the attorney general, the NACC has decided to push for the two to be relieved of their political positions under the charges of abusing their power in office.

The NACC claimed it is using its power as an independent entity under Section 250 of the constitution to bring charges against the former prime minister and his former deputy prime minister. It found the duo used unlawful orders allowing the military to use real ammunitions to disperse political mobs in 2010, causing deaths to 99 people and injuries to 1,000 others.
