My visa runs out on April 14. Will I be able to get an extension FROM that date any earlier? i.e. Could I apply on ,say, April 9 for an extension from April 14 through to May 14?

You would be requesting an extension of permission to stay, by 30 days, I assume you are talking about a Tourist Visa. Yes, you can go early and receive an additional 30 days, you don't lose any by going early.

You can do it any time from Tuesday to Friday next week immigration is closed on Monday. If not the 17th would be the first day you could do after the holidays.

Hopefully the O/P actually has a visa and not a visa exempt entry. Unfortunately, in many cases the term "visa" is used rather loosely to include extensions of stay and visa exempt entries.
