The headline is rather vague. I got the impression that Suthep wanted the king to appoint himself, HRM, as coup leader, Otherwise the reflexive pronoun is inappropriate here, it lead me to wonder if Suthep is asking the king, who is non-political, to change his position and become a political entity.

Should Suthep take power of the country I believe he will then have the power to change the succession law.

Bingo. You have just scored a hole in one!

Does Leste Majeste trump murder in Thailand? The all mighty one may very well find himself in a great deal of trouble. He needs to seize total power of the country very quick to exonerate himself.

Suthep has far too many powerful friends and backers to be worried about the Less Majeste laws, or indeed it would appear any other laws!

Who your mates are trumps everything I'm afraid.

My wife and most of her family have strong PDRC sympathies. I do not, nor do I agree with and support PTP. I admit to having little respect for either side. She told me the Khaosad report is accurate. Her Mother was at the rally where he made these quotes. They are also wondering why only Khaosad reported these quotes. My wife and her family are still debating what to do, and at last word they are leaning toward going back to the Dems and leaving Suthep as far behind as they can. Her last quote was: "PTP are corrupt. Suthep became a peedip (zombie)."

I hope this idiot does talk to the Great Man. If there was ever a Thai who most needed to heed HM advice, this fascist pig is the one.

These quotes are not correct and I had family there as well. He skirted the issues. I have written this elsewhere.

Seriously, even the most devout PRDC wouldn't support Suthep as PM, based on his promises. He is a conduit for others. The other newspaper, on Saturday, under Breaking News Online, wrote that he would submit someone else's name to HM the King, as PM should YL be knocked out. There are also rumors that the RS's will support someone else of similar status, that supports their cause.

After watching a bit more with Thai friends you are right from what i have seen. the Khaosod article takes only snippets from Suthep's speech and otherwise adds nasty twist and spin.

No doubt he has said quite some nasty things himself over the last months, but the message and tone seem to have improved. one of the other things that he said in this same speech included a reminder and invite for red supporters to join the reform process. the reminder was that they are all sisters and brothers, and that a successful reform cannot work without them and needs their all input, from all sides of the divide.

But those that drive the "news" at khaosod will obviously ensure this is not a message their readers might be interested in so it will be left out.

There is only one way to save Thailand - overthrow the populist corrupted government, to achieve this goal one should use strong measures - like Field Marshall Kittikachon when he fought with communists.

Now the same destructive idea (but in new mask) raise it's head again and, as history teaches us, only a strong leader can cut this head one more time.

Mr Suthep!

The fate chose you to be a savior of your motherland.

I wish you all the success and good luck!

really? why bother? it's not like the Thais have a democratic mindset. Cromwell was a strong leader with similar ideals and when he died the monarchy returned with a vengeance. There is nothing wrong with corruption as long as one is on the receiving end,its like winning the lotto, you know the odds are against you but you still play.......maybe,just maybe, one day i will be the one holding out my hand so lets keep it rolling.

Where have I heard that before, and didn't it end badly?

Keeping in mind that there is no possible way to speak on this subject without conflicting with ThaiVisa's rules of conduct

Let's just game this out:

So what if Suthep is stupid enough to go through with this pan- and assuming no member of the Royal family engages with the request- then what?

Is a refusal tantamount to opposition? =\

This seems extra sketchy, even for mad dog Suthep.

Exactly.

Suthep is not so stupid... all you farang may think he is, but he is a wily old fox... Far from being stupid.

He knows he would never get a royal endorsement for a revolution. He would also never put his majesty in the position of having to make a decision like that.

He has not yet shown his hand regarding what actually the process is.

This has all been made up to stir up hatred for him, so that him and his movement will hopefully be attacked with unrelenting violence. That is all this stupid report is all about.......... incitement.

Suthep's an incredibly smart operator.

Never doubt that...... He has out-manouvered this government and all their so called legal experts constantly over the past 5 months and he will win this war for the people.

He also is well aware of the possible violence from the reds, I am sure he has plenty of plans laid out to thwart them.

The government lay out all their cards on the table on a daily basis about doing this next and that next... the smart poker player plays his cards close to his chest.... leaving people to guess and speculate.... he is laughing his tits off.

Sure is a guy to be respected and looked up to. So far he has failed at every hurdle. 1995 to present corruption scandal[edit]

As part of the Sor Por Kor 4-01 (สปก.4-01) land reform scheme, Suthep gave title deeds to 592 plots of land in Khao Sam Liam, Kamala and Nakkerd hills of Phuket province to 489 farmers. It was later found that members of 11 wealthy families in Phuket were among the recipients. Suthep addressed a huge crowd in his Surat Thani constituency a month before a no-confidence debate and called on his supporters to march on Bangkok in the hundreds of thousands to defend his reputation.[5] The scandal led Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai of the Democrat Party to dissolve the House of Representatives in July 1995 in order to avoid the no-confidence debate.[6] In subsequent elections, Thai Nation Partywon a majority, leading to the downfall of Chuan Leekpai's Democrat Party-led government.

Wikileaks diplomatic cables from the US embassy revealed that many members of his own party have long complained of his corrupt and unethical behavior.[7][8][9]

No-one in Thailand is too powerful to be above the "Lese Majeste laws". No general, no politician, no billionaire, no monk, no one.

Anyone overstepping the (ill-defined) line will be toast.

Well that outburst meant he lost any credibility as far as I was concerned. At least one military leader has some moderation thankfully.

He hasen't lost any credibility with me yet. That is all talk. What he does in the future could change my opinion but at this point I think he is just mimicking Jatuprn and dribbeling nonsense.

It in no way takes away the good he has done rthe nation so far.

Furthermore, it is highly unlikely that millions of pro-government supporters in the north and northeast will quietly accept Mr. Suthep's effort to remove their elected government.

Have to agree with that.

In a separate mass rally in Nakorn Pathom province yesterday, Redshirts leader Jatupon Prompan insisted that the Redshirts are willing to fight for Ms. Yingluck, and ominously warned that a "civil war" could break out of Ms. Yingluck is removed by undemocratic ways.

Typical red shirt reaction threaten violence if they don't get their way. I wish he would complete the big baby scene and threaten to hold his breath until he get's his way.

Suthep had best back off up until the last few days he was being rational the Thai way. Now he is listening to Jatuporn and trying to equal his nonsense.

But I do admit he has done a great job up to this point. Time to let the system take over. If the red shirts stage an armed revolt the Army will crush them like a bug. They learned in 2010 what being nice to them get's them.

"It in no way takes away the good he has done rthe nation so far."

Name one good thing! Good for Thailand, not for himself or those that refuse to recognise the democratic process, just Thailand.

Well please explain how the position that Suthep and his bunch is supporting democracy.

Animals? Sc***w you and your petty insults. You are continuing the horrendous class split that exists in this country. How on earth you as a probable farang can support Suthep and his nonsense I don't know.

You think the reds will feel superior around me? The one thing I know for sure is that your average yellow shirt definitely laughs at your support and definitely feels superior to you.

Hehehe.

Pushed your buttons did I?

You support the child murderers all you want. Maybe your little terror friends will pop a few more off for you.

Personally I support reforms, you lot simply don't support reforms.

It is simple as that really.

Thai at heart...... OMG!!

More like People's Republic Of Lanna at heart.

Your stupid Idol has wrecked this country, and actually made the poor, even poorer..... You know it, but your wife won't let you admit it.

Enjoy your exodus when your red buffs turn on you...... lol

Well "Hello Dolly"! the nastiness returns.

Robert Amsterdam issued a statement following Suthep's attacks on him ( calling him an interfering "bloody farang")

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/suthep-leading-a-thai-taliban-says-lawyer-amsterdam-254127051.html

He is a bloody farang, why does he interfere in Thai politics?," Suthep said, repeatedly referring to Mr. Amsterdam as a "bastard"

"It's clear that Suthep is deeply concerned by the recent news that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is looking into alleged interference by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) in parliamentary affairs by probing of 308 senators and former members of parliament for voting for a constitutional amendment. The international community should continue to remind these anti-government Thai elites that another judicial coup shall not be tolerated."

Robert Amsterdam serves as international counsel to the United National Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) of Thailand. More information can be read at http://robertamsterdam.com/thailand.

SOURCE Amsterdam & Partners LLP

Suthep is quite correct, Amsterdam is a bloody farang working for a farang from Montenegro, so he should not interfere in Thai politics.

By the way, what is the IPU, is that another PTP brainchild ?

Not sure the red shirts are starting to fragment it might be one of their organization.

Not sure how Khao Sod's reporting can be called 'propaganda' or fabricated in this instance. There doesn't seem to be much real difference between its version and other versions except that it's more detailed and explicit about what will be done. One signicant difference is that Khao Sod describes Suthep as speaking as "I" (as though he's unilaterally taking decisions) and other translations describe him as saying "we" - pronouns are often left out of Thai speech so perhaps it was open to interpretation. In any case, there's no practical difference. Suthep is saying he'll go to the King, have himself appointed coup leader (as all previous coup leaders have done) then will proceed to appoint a PM and People's Council on behalf of the "people", having assumed the sovereign power bestowed to him by those same "people".

Here's some other tweets which support this version of how Suthep intends to go about this:

Aim_The Nation @Aim_NT Apr 5

Recap: The resolution of 1,800 PDRC network today: PDRC must take sovereignty back from "Miss Flower (PM Yingluck)": Suthep Via @madoodao

Aim_The Nation @Aim_NT Apr 5

PDRC will announce its sovereignty, set up people's govt, ppl's legislative assembly, the reform Thailand: Suthep via @madoodao

Aim_The Nation @Aim_NT Apr 5

Recap: All supporters must be prepared, the next whistle blowing (mass rally) might be 15-day+ long: Suthep via @madoodao

So I can't see what people are strongly objecting to in the Khao Sod report. As I say, the only clear difference seems to be that Khao Sod makes it sound as though Suthep is going to take unilateral action whereas other reports have it down as the PDRC taking action collectively (but with Suthep at its head and as its key actor)... and there isn't real a substantial difference between calling it a collective PDRC action and describing it as though Suthep is alone assuming sovereign power. For all practical purposes, the buck will stop with Suthep if he manages to get what he wants. Of course, he promises to step aside once he's appointed the Council and interim PM. That is something that Khao Sod perhaps didn't make clear, although they could perhaps argue that Suthep will hold the real power even if he steps into the background once the interim PM and council is appointed, given his ability to mobilize street protesters if they do something he doesn't like (this is debatable).

This seems contentious since no other agency reported it: "We will have something like Article 17 [of 1959 Administrative Charter] as the highest law," Mr. Suthep said, referring to the charter article which allowed Field Marshal Sarit to fight suspected Communist threats by all means, " will be able to order anyone to be executed by firing squad, but I will only freeze assets". Yet since it's a direct quote, I find it hard to believe it was completely fabricated. It's more likely others decided not to quote it because they'd have to go into details of Article 17 etc and perhaps it was just too much trouble. Khao Sod have apologized for making errors before but fabricating a whole quote is a different matter entirely and something which seems unlikely to me as it actually seems that they're trying hard to get things right in terms of translation and accurate quoting (although we've had past debates about some of the controversial translations they've made).

Anyway, as above, Article 17 was part of Sarit's interim constitution of 1959 and it's understood to have given him more or less arbitrary power. I believe this provision was still in place throughout the Sarit-Thanom period and Sarit did indeed have many alleged criminals shot on the spot without trial (and this sort of "decisive" leadership is still viewed positively by many Thais hence the popularity of the war on drugs). So I guess Suthep is pretty much saying, yes, he could do what he wants under a new Article 17, but since he's responsible, he'll only use it to seize assets. I take it he said this to reassure people that he's not the type who'd be completely crazed with power and won't suddenly start having people who he doesn't like shot.

Well, Suthep getting people that he does not like shot, reminds me of his record back in 2010, when he had 90 of them shot, and believe me, it was him who gave the order to fire on protesters, not Abisit.Where power is concerned, Suthep is completely untrustworthy, in fact he is a complete grade 'A' meglomaniac. Given the chance he will go off like a firecracker, stamping on anybody who opposes him. Look out Thailand if this corrupt grub is allowed to get away with it.

Back in 2010 he showed that he had the nerve to stand up to Thaksin's tyranny. That is a plus for him. If you will recall he even had the willing ness to turn himself into the police at the demand of the red shirts in order to attain peace. Thaksin changed his mind and reneged on the truce. the red shirts continued with their armed coup attempt even though not once but twice they had received what they wanted only to have Thaksin change his mind. Who made the decision to continue the stand off. It was the red shirts decision and the deaths should be laid in their hands. With the PTP that will never happen because they are one and the same both working for the same man.

I have absolutely no problem with Yingluck being thrown out of office and all the finances of the Shinawatra's being frozen until the corruption trails have indited them or cleared them. It will not be a problem for them as they have many of there's in foreign countries where Thailand can not touch them.

I personal wonder if Yingluckis preparing a defiance against dereliction of duty I stink she may be getting her holdings transferred out of the country.

Khaosod have such a purely dreadful history given almost all the reporting they have done, to such a degree that they are often completely isolated regarding the stories that they cover and their own inimitable way of reporting them, that it would be prudent to wait until this is covered by other news agencies.

Good grief, it has been covered in other media, both Thai and non-Thai. Those of you who supported this monster uncritically over the past six or more months should be a little ashamed of yourselves. That said, this is nothing that wasn't glaringly obvious to those who bothered to look at what he was saying rather than just cheering him along. You forget the threats to kill Yingluck, the list of 3000 to be eradicated after he wins, and much more of the same.

But but but, he was only acting for the good of the country and didn't want any power for himself, and of course he would give us back democracy, and save us from the majority, and give is ice cream too.

And don't foget about reform, it's all really about reform!

So let me get this straight. Suthep is going to ask a constitutional monarchy to appoint him dictator? Yeah, that's gonna happen. Not!

Please read some other news sources. The Khaosod article at the top of this thread is all lies.

If it is true that the khaosod article is all lies and propaganda, then the mods should close this thread and place a retraction on the front page.

Won't happen. It's generated 300 replies and 15,000 views so its good for business. Judging by these results, Khaosod must be pleased as well with its successful hyperbolic trolling consisting of lies and distortion.
