Phuket Long Term Car Rental - 16000 baht per month is a good deal?

Hi all,

You were extremely helpful on other threads including one I'd started so wanted to thank you in advance for any advice. Did a search for this topic but wanted an updated picture of the long term rental market.

Any decent and affordable long term car rentals? Looking for August to mid December (will be home for Christmas so car could be rented out for high season then) and then again from early January through late June?

Looked at Avis and they were over 800 US dollars per month. Perhaps they do long term deals so will call them as can't find a Phuket Airport email for them.

Also emailed Sixt, Budget, and http://www.phuket-carrent.net/

The lowest quote received was 16000 thai baht (496 US dollars) per month for a Honda City or Jazz plus a 3% surcharge for using my Visa credit card.

Will look at Thaivisa classifieds as well as Phuket Gazette too but wondered if any of you kind folks had any leads? Also would it make more sense to just buy as we will probably be here at least 2 years.

Cheers and looking forward to Phuket in a few months!

Make sure who ever you rent from has full insurance cover most of the small businesses do

not and you could be up paying a lot of money if involved in a accident

Buying a car is a good ideal they hold their resale value very well here

A new hond Jazz should not depreciate at more than 50k baht a year if you look after it

Appreciate your response and Ned Kelly is a hero of mine so great name!

I agree about the insurance as I want the best insurance available, especially since it seems like there are a lot of accidents on the roads in Phuket.

Think I might buy a car but still thinking of renting. If anyone knows any reputable car dealers for either sale or lease please either PM me or link to me here.

Not wishing to contradict you Ned but just last week was looking at buying a new

Toyota Camry and trading in our 5 year old Camry, which cost 1.2 mtb in august

2008 less than 70,000kms on the clock and serviced solely by Toyota and the best

trade in offer we could get from Toyota was 590,000 Baht, so somewhat more than

50k baht per year depreciation Ned.

Mate camry's are imported probably from Australia and are 2 to 3 times the price here and consjdered a luxury car by some people

I am talking about a Jazz, or Vious, I had a Vious for over six years and got 280 baht less than i paid for it, well looked after

Thats 47k baht a year had 57K on the clock, if you really want to loose money on a vehicle buy a BMW or mercedes benz

All the toyota dealerships here are owned by the same people as far as i know, probably the same

with all the different makes, i do not think you can lease a car here, i could be wrong and wil find out

if i am soon enough, generally with farangs its cash, some people buy on credit with a Thai to guarantee the loan

Resale market isn't what it used to be, now that many of those cars bought under the gov't 100K baht back scheme are in arrears of their payments.

Camry is not an import at all, it;s made here and that's why the price is as low as it is.

For the OP, there is a Phuket buy/sell cars page on Facebook that has a lot of vehicles listed for rent, quite often around the 12K mark.

A fully loaded Camry in Australia with a 2.4 litre engine licensed ready to drive away with a 3 year roadside warranty

Was 28K AUD in Australia

A fully Loaded camry here wih a 2 litre engine was 63k AUD this was in 2006 when i check prices and they were imported

at that time, things may have changed but i cannot see toyota setting up a production line for camry's here when they

already have one in australia and the car carrying ships return here mostly empty

The biggest ford SUV sold here is manufacturer in australia as well and is over twice the price here

When the auto manufacturers shut down their production in Australia they wil probably send their production

lines to thaiand but they have not shut down yet

Resale market relies on supply and demand and could be different in 2 years time, even currenty resale

value is good here conpared to Australia, could be different in the USA

Just for you nedkellylives

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_manufacturing_facilities#Thailand

If the camry was imported ( in the past present, or future) , there would be a minimum of doubling of the price due to import tax. High end camry is almost 1.9 mil locally made.

It is double the price of a camry in Australia with a smallr engine

Next time i am passing a toyota dealer with a camry on display i will check the manufacturers plate

I am not saying you are wrong but i know wikipedia is not always right
