Can I Travel Out of the Contry and back on My Valid Retirement Visa in My Old Passport

Featured Replies

Later this year I will be renewing my American passport, say late August. Will I be able to use my Retirement Visa Extension in my old passport until I renew my visa in late September?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Pop along to Immigration and they will transfer the extension stamp to your new passport.

Get a re-entry permit before you leave the country.

You want to travel out of the country, in that case it is best to visit immigration to have the stamps transferred.

MY last new US passport was issued in Phnom Penh.

My RETIREMENT extension was issued in Phuket,

I went in and out of Thailand twice with my new passport ( they stamped me in and out on new passport) an extension stamped in the old passport, as u can only ( or so i was told) have your extension transfered to your new passport from where it was issued.

Both times no problem.

So I can travel with my new passport and use my old passport until I renew my Retirement Visa extension in September. My old passport contains a valid Retirement Visa extension and multiple entry permit.

"as u can only ( or so i was told) have your extension transfered to your new passport from where it was issued."

Wrong !

Bad information!

Can someone go over the process for transferring extensions, etc.?

I am American and pretty much in the same boat as the OP, though my passport has over a year left. I'm returning to the US for a couple of months and don't have much space left in my current passport and decided given that I will need to renew my passport before my next extension have decided to just renew my passport by end of summer (I think adding pages would be a waste of money).

I've looked at Immigration's requirements and they seem straight-forward, but what is the "certificate of embassy"? On the U.S. Citizen Services page I did not see such an affidavit available. Copy of arrival stamp I assume means last arrival.

The site also says:

"The following information must be provided: Passport or travel document number, place and date of issue, visa type, port and mode of arrival, date of arrival (first date of arrival) and admission period, reason for changing passport or travel document and transferring visa stamp.

In case of foreign national with application for residence in the Kingdom, the date of application for residence as well as the consideration period must be given. If during the consideration period a re-entry permit was issued and the applicant has left and re-entered the country, evidence of the most recent arrival must be given."

Visa type refers to original visa? I came on an ED visa but extend based on retirement, after talking to an immigration officer a few months after I was here.

Admission period refers to original admission, or current extension?

I hope this is not off topic, but since I have quite a number of travel plans after my return to Thailand thought that this thread is an opportune time for me to ask?

The embassy will give you a letter for immigration when you pick-up your passport.

Then you just go to immigration and with a completed Transfer Stamp to a New Passport Form and copies of your new/old passports photo page, Old passport copies of visa, entry/permit to stay stamp, your most recent extension stamp (re-entry permit also if you have a valid one) and TM6 departure card.

It wasn't clear (at least to me) whether he intends to get a new passport in Thailand or while in the US. I know that US Embassy in Bangkok routinely issues a letter when giving out new passports, but will that also be true if he gets the new passport in the US ... or possibly they'll issue an acceptable receipt?

It sounded like here to me.

Getting it here is a better choice than the states. It can take up to 6 weeks to get it in the states unless you pay $60 extra to get expedited service that will take 2 weeks. Plus here you get the 52 page passport without needing to ask for it.

Here is certainly the best. .I got my new passport last year. I got an email 10 days from the date I applied telling me my passport was at the embassy.

They hand over the letter with your passport.

Not true , passports can have all info transferred any immigration, though the thieves at hua hin demanded 500 baht from me, no receipt. Bastards.

If you are on an extension of stay you have to have the stamp transfer done at the office where you applied for the extension unless you have moved and can prove your address at a new location.

I did the same and renewed my old passport in my country. Just make sure you have a reentry visa on your retirement visa and when they cancel your old passport by making hole in it they should not do the same on pages where your Retirement visa and your Reentry visas are. Then bring it with your new passport and show them together at immigration.

When you want to extend your retirement visa they immigration will use an extra day or two to first transfer the old visa from your old passport to your new passport and then they extend your retirement visa in your new passport.

If your passport has expired, I assume you got a new one. Now, you have to go to immigration and get all of the visa's, stamps, etc. transferred. No charge in C.M.

Just a word of caution. I just picked up my new Passport at the US Consulate in Chiang Mai only 6 day turn around. But make sure you count the pages before you leave. I was only issued with a 44 page pp not a 52 as stated. Not a big thing for me but for others yes.

You must be counting only the usable pages. If you had gotten a small passport the pages would of been much less if you counted all the pages.

The 52 pages is the total pages just look at the page numbers.

You are correct. Thanks
