BANGKOK: -- Police yesterday morning arrested 56 youths and impounded 47 motorcycles for illegally racing on Kanchanapisek road in Bangkok's Bang Bon district.

Following complaints by local residents that street racers caused a public nuisance and blocked traffic in the area, police carried out a 45-strong police operation at 2.30 to round up street racers.

Of the 56 youths (44 males and 12 females) arrested, 24 of them - 21 boys and three girls - were under 18 years old.

They would be facing a charge of reckless motorcycle riding with disregard to others' safety, which was punishable for up to a three-month imprisonment and/or a fine ranged from Bt2,000 to Bt10,0000.

The youths over 18 years old were sent to the Thon Buri Criminal Court, while those under 18 were sent to the Juvenile Court.

In this operation, two policemen - Pol Sr Sgt-Major Jakrapong Pinjai and Pol Sr Sgt-Major Thanapol Thongruang - were slightly injured after being hit with fleeing motorcycles.

"Reckless motorcycling and disregard for others safety" there would be thousands arrested if they applied that to the idiots who use the footpath/sidewalk for moving around. With this event it will be a 2000 baht fine paid for by mummy and daddy and boyracing again continues in a few weeks

In the case of those involved with the vehicular collisions with the police officers, it will be a criminal record. The lower courts do impose that penalty on the perps if they are neither wealthy nor well connected.

No pictures of the prizes on offer?

Or did they pay their way out of trouble in a different manner. giggle.gif

They're not shirtless by choice, it's a way the police use for temporarily identifying those that they have an interest in. Completely different from shirtless farangs.

They have introduced the hoon law in OZ, so all those bikes would be confiscated. End of story.coffee1.gif

Not permanently for a first offence though. Our soft cock politicians watered down what the cops wanted, and it's now multiple offences before a hoon sees his car/bike taken permanently.

Well if that's the fine for the offences that they've been charged with what's the problem? That's the procedure with any crime, get caught, get fined and on your way. No need to denegrate the police for doing a good job, nothing to do with show and tell unless you apply that description to every reported operation

Good to see the police does anything in this sensitive case. The problem it is mostly 500 B fine not more, and nothing will be changed.

Than these small monkeys get died by crazy riding and racing and their family talks about bad luck and bad karma instead of a very simple idiocy.

Yeah...the hoon law superseded the previous outdated law which was repealed to make way for the introduction of the law that was brought in to adjust the amended law which was suspended....... So many laws, OZ the police state. One of the main reasons why I am here and loving it wai.gif

The main point being made is that the fine is not an effective deterrent. Unless there is a sea-change in society culture this scenario will happen time and time again. The show and tell is a standard placebo by those in power to placate the uneducated. What would be more fruitful is to build a proper racing track for these youths, but that would lose revenue, so it would never happen.

How do they identify female offenders that they "have an interest in " ?

Only one way imo. Fine is minimum Baht 10K or thirty days in jail; impound the bikes with a Baht 20K impound fee. If impound fee is not paid within thirty days auction the bikes off to highest bidder. As others here have said a Baht 1K fine is a joke.

There are some right miserable curmugeons posting on this thread. If you wanted laws for this and laws for that, you should have stayed at home. Personally, i don't have much of a problem woth kids tweaking their mopeds and racing them for fun. Hell, boys have been doing its like since mankind first put an engine on wheels. Half the pop songs of our childhood were themed on the very topic...

You for one are a misguided soul. Why are you suggesting others that you don't agree with to stay home?!! Who in hell put you in charge?! A government sponsored race track comes to mind.

No, no, we not hate you, we’re jealous, because we can’t do the same without getting as black as charcoal, that’s why we go and swim at the beach with our jeans and t-shirt and sometimes we don’t even take our sneakers off.

The aspect of the winner getting the loser's GF (or head sgoy girl) for the night to do whatever he pleases to her, is more interesting than what most of us got up to as adolescents.

Yep. Just so long as its not outside your house, keeping you and your kids awake or endangering any of your family eh?

'... Pol Sr Sgt-Major Jakrapong Pinjai and Pol Sr Sgt-Major Thanapol Thongruang - were slightly injured after being hit with fleeing motorcycles ...' The motorcycles were evidently quicker off the mark than their owners.
