I weened myself in recent months from Sing to Chang to Leo to Heine (the big Thai brewed premium :o ) Incredible what happened. I stopped drinking the Thai brewed products a month ago after having forced down an average of 4 bottles/day for a little over a year (the broad spectrum of nasty thai brews, I mean the whole ball of their wax: chang, sing, heine, leo and nasty tiger). OK so I stopped for a week and was shelling huge cash daily to drink Coopers and Bud (went flat broke doing it). So after a week on the wagon from the horrendous thai brews, I reached into my fridge and grabbed a leftover can of Leo and drank it. Whamo, within a few hours, my head felt like someone pounded it several times with a sledge hammer. It was a pounder unlike and pounder I've had in 3 years. I was in excruciating pain, I mean massive. I couldn't take it. This was no ordinary headache. I reached for the ibuprofen (a drug that has never ever failed to rid me of even the worst headache), took 400 mgs and went to sleep. Woke up a few hours later with same fierce pounding headache. I was dying really. I reached again for 400 mg more ibuprofen, went back to sleep, woke up a few hours later headache intact but more severe. Now I couldn't sleep and I was suffering badly. Now the headache qualified as my worst ever; I mean even old reliable ibuprofen didn't work. It was so bad that I thought I might have a brain tumor. Well the headache finally went away 18 hours after drinking the dreaded Leo. Well, up until a year and a half ago or so I never drank Thai beers due to the nasty taste and subsequent changover, now I am vowing from here forward to never do so again. There are some serious chemicals in the brew that my little unplanned experiment shows. I had cleared my body of these chems, then introduced them back and bam, I thought I was going to die!

PS: I went out tonite to Tops and bought a 102 baht Corona (I feel like I've been robbed), it was nice and cold. I opened it right on premisis and promptly downed it. Man it was smooth and refreshing. I put it away in less that 5 minutes and grabbed another and did same. Then I grabbed a 3rd. No nasty aftertaste as I've tolerated for the last year and no headache; it was a true breath of fresh air but I dont like the fact that I feel like someone is raping me when I pay for it. Enough of drinking Thai brews and having every sip go down like a shot of cheap whiskey. There is something deeply wrong with Thai brews. I'm pretty sure they cause cancer. Try the experiment yourself, you'll see

Is there any evidence to back up your claims ...? :o

Whatever 'chemicals' are put into beer Leo, I cannot imagine 330 ml of it causing an excruciating headache.

September 2004, I had a reason to visit UK for 2 weeks (I couldn't possibly avoid it).

During that time I drank Guinness, Boddingtons, Tetleys, Thwaites, Black Sheep, Timothy Taylors, John Smiths, Sam Smiths, Courage Directors, plus a few more.

We returned to Thailand around 20:00 hours at which time I had sufficient time to consume 3 *Chang* awaiting the train and a further 3 on the train. We were awoken in Surin at about 05:30 and not a sign of a hangover.

I think you may be allergic to something.

Jeez you are a cheap charlie. 102 baht for a Corona. What would it cost in the States?. In a boozer in England (where YOU could probably also not get a decent beer) it would cost 202 baht. :o

I try not to drink on an empty stomach, for no other reason than not getting too buzzed so quickly,

but found it also seems to negate hang-overs, regardless what I'm drinking, mod8(smoking%20pipe)a.gif

I agree that Thai beer is full of crap. My experiments have yielded the following results:

Leo: Tastes nasty warm, slightly better cold. Best served in cans, bottles are rank. Slight chemical aftertaste, mild hangover the next day.

Chang: Tastes okay, always get a massive hangover. Alcoholics seem to like it.

Chang Draft: Tastes okay, no hangover.

Archa: Tastes okayish, no hang over.

Singha: Tastes soapy. Not really been able to drink enough to get a hangover.

Tiger: Tastes more like a beer than others. Have gotten hangovers from it. Goes well with ice.

Heineken: Taste is insubstantial but have never gotten hangovers.

San Miguel: Tastes nice, no hang overs.

I have to say though that beers made by/in neighbouring countries are miles ahead of Thai beers.

Beer Myanmar - Great beer, good body.

Beer Lao - Crisp beer, made by German specs but reminiscent of a decent French lager

Carlsberg (Malaysia) - A God of Asian brewed beers, it tastes GREAT.

Lampard, a typical "fancy" import or micro-brewed beer (including all those German once we've been discussing previosuly) would cost less than $8 US by the six-pack, or about 50 THB per bottle. I think Corona runs for less than that (not sure, because it isn't my preferred drink). Many simpler domestic brews are around $5 or about 30 THB per bottle. Remember, we're talking grocery prices and not pub prices which can often double that, except maybe during happy hour.

Corona in the US runs $10 a 12 pk or $9 on sale or 30 baht per bottle. Beer is dirt cheap in the US. England rapes you for everything, thats nothing new but dont group the land of mass goods in services in with that place. we get shit cheap cheap cheap

No no no, you got it totally wrong raro, the guinea pigs are the likes of totser and most other expats who drink this crap daily and think that pounding hangovers are normal. Little do they know but they are injecting themselves with formaldehype and are doing great harm in the process. The entire thai brew beer drinking population are the guinea pigs. dont count me among them cause I have discontinued drinking the garbage. where is that beer lao anyway? I want to evaluate it. you'll never see that one mass distributed. those brews with the tax stamps will never be found at your local 7/11 for sure. imagine a 7/11/family mart actually carrying an imported beer. never happen

And for you information I get the same pounding hangovers when drinking beers/ciders in the UK.. don't tell me they're in the "secretly poisoning the public" gang also.. :D

Never have any issues about Beers here...but then i don't drink much(anymore).

Some years ago i had hangovers but that can be blamed to my smoking...smoking and drinking is great but ohhh so bad the next day.

As for chemicals added , i do understand that other Breweries do that too ...not only in Thailand. One of them is Corona (which i like to drink too sometimes) or Dos Equis as for the Mexican Beer(those beers were taken off the shelves in Europe for it's contends- back in the 90's ).

In regards of American beer it is crap and has nothing to do with Beer altogether Budweiser ? Coors? Millers? i can honestly say my Pi55 is worth more than that. Anybody who wants to tell me that Thai Beer is crap but American is good (for christ sake, it shouldn't even called Beer!!!) .....sorry you have never tasted any real beers....try European Beers ! Than you know!

Corona is considered a 3rd class(class in class of beers, not people) beer in the states, the urban myth about Mexicans pissing in it didnt help its reputation.

Its a regional beer, more popular in the south west, it was a fad for awhile because folks thought it was "neet" to have a lime in the neck of the bottle.

But cost wise its pretty cheap.

when you say 4 bottles a day.is that big or small bottles?its just it makes me feel better when i hear people drinking more than i.

i heard that the thai breweries just put fameldahyde inside the bottle rim before they cap it so germs dont enter.maybe thats another wives tale.

Agreed, Duve, Trappist and Kriek are some very nice beers (anybody knows where to buy?)...funnily i never drank it in Belgium but in French Polynesia...so to get people off the complain about Beer prices - 330 ml Hinano(la biere de Tahiti) costs at Mana Rock Cafe(Papeete/tahiti) 5 USD during the day and at night 10 USD ....and bora bora's pricing is even higher.... Can't remember exact prices of the Belgium beers there but they where higher in Price. Compared to that we are in Paradise here in Thailand .

Born and raised in Germany where the world's oldest and strictest food purity law is in place. According to that law from 1516 nothing but water, malt and hop is allowed to make beer. Still, that stuff creates serious hangovers if consumed in sufficient amounts.

As Paracelsus has put it:

Alle Ding' sind Gift und nichts ohn' Gift; allein die Dosis macht, das ein Ding kein Gift ist.

"All things are poison and nothing (is) without poison; only the dose makes that a thing is no poison."
