Tablets on way to M1 students in 10 provinces

BANGKOK, 22 April 2014 (NNT) - Education Minister Jaturon Chaisaeng on Tuesday presided over a ceremony to distribute more than 78,700 tablet computers to Mathayom 1 students in the Central and Southern regions.

This lot of tablets is the first lot of the total 426,683 tablets which have been approved by the Office of the Basic Education Commission. The tablets will be shipped to the students after the computer tablet program’s panel finished inspecting them in line with the set standards. Around 74,000 tablets will be handed out to the students and the rest to their teachers.

There are 10 provinces where the tablets will be distributed, including Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Chin Buri, Krabi and Phatthalung.

The second lot of the tablets is expected to be shipped by the end of April.

This tablet delivery is almost a year late. Retail prices and manufacturing costs decrease about 25% per year and they were probably paid last year's contract price. Sounds like extra profit for the manufacturer and some large red envelopes for a few government officials.

Giving junk tablets to students is a really bad idea. I wonder how many are still functioning properly or haven't gone missing from the very first batch from a few years ago. I would bet it is a very small number.

Is it too much to ask to have some kind of follow-up as to what happens after these tablet computers are delivered ?

- do they work ?

- do they break down ?

- do they have to be shipped for repair when they do ?

- how many get " lost " ?

- does the teacher spend most of the time trying to get the kids from playing computer games ?

And last - but hopefully not least - does their presence enhance in any way the student's abilities to learn ?

Here is the killer - who is responsible to pay for their repair when they stop working or are damaged? coffee1.gif

Some answers to questions are contained in a much more detailed report elsewhere, type tablets in the search and scroll down.

A Thai company Supreme Distribution looks to be the supplier of this lot ant there is supposed to be a 2 year guarantee.

The company says they have set up 9 service centers and 42 drop off points.

There is an other story dated 7 Oct 2013 where the Audit Office says 30% of tablets are broken.

If y"all don't remember the last batch had software problems. Then the company who makes them filed bankruptcy and the last i heard the education ministry was opening bidding for this again and demanding repayment for undelivered units. The problems with the previous batch were being attempted to be fixed by a tech school and their students.

So who sent these? Or are they the ones that got fixed?

Who won the bidding for the reat of the tablets they wanted? Does this batch work since the last batch was so badly made. And of course the biggest question! Why in the heck would they do thid tablet scheme when most upper grades take students phones to stop them socializing during class. These tablets will not help any student do better. Wasted money for something used just for show

has the national curriculum been updated to include learning objectives and measures for lessons using tablet computers?

have teachers been trained how to optimise the benefit of using tablet computers in the classroom?

have tangible and measurable benefits been identified for this initiative? (apart from political PR capital?)

The kids who got a tabletPC while in P1 took them moving to P2 and waited for the availability of P2 programs. That schoolyear finished a month ago. Did they ever get new P2 programs or did they do the Thai 'learn by repetition thing for another year? Any news on the P3 program?

Of course the P1 kids have been waiting for a year and now hope moving to P2 they get a nice tabletPC at long last.

42 drop of points in 60 provinces?

I thought the schools are closed for the summer vacation.

Who did they deliver the tablets to?

Or this is one of the usual lies we keep hearing?

Makes no difference they were probably delivered to the schools with out electricity.clap2.gif

Here they come. The Thai tablets are on their way. One tablet for every child. Functionality and usability unimportant so long as they get them.

And Yingluck's government can not even do that.

The whole scam is literally years behind schedule for simply delivering them, let alone making them a viable and useful educational tool.

Sister-in-law's daughter got a tablet. It's garbage. They stopped using them at her school after a few weeks because too many of them stopped working.

As a side note, she has been studying English for 5 years. She doesn't know her A,B,Cs if you show the letters out of order, and she doesn't know how to read a single word of English. Not a word. It's really sad. She has memorized speaking a few basic words, but can't read them to save her life.
