PM accepts EC’s invitation for April 30 meeting

BANGKOK, 27 April 2014 (NNT) – Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has accepted an invitation from the Election Commission (EC) to discuss the agency's planned election on April 30th.

Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) Supachai Somcharoen has revealed that the EC will on April 30th meet with the Thai Premier to discuss the organizing of general election, adding that the EC was still uncertain if the election could be held before July 20th as the matter would have to be further discussed with other election commissioners.

In response to Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva’s request, Mr. Supachai said the EC would be willing to engage in talks with Mr. Abhisit, expressing hope that the Opposition party would take part in the next general election.

Meanwhile, Suan Dusit Poll revealed its latest survey on more than 1,360 people, saying the majority of the respondents wanted to see the election held at the earliest possible date or on July 20th, reasoning that the country would be able to move forward once the new government was formed. When asked about their opinions on discussions between groups involved in the current conflict, most of the people said they neither felt satisfied nor disappointed as they thought engaging in talks and discussions was just an act of testing the waters.

In response to Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva’s request, Mr. Supachai said the EC would be willing to engage in talks with Mr. Abhisit, expressing hope that the Opposition party would take part in the next general election.

A very interesting statement.

Firstly, Mr. Supachai makes no mention of reform having to take place before the next election yet expresses the hope that the dems would take part in it. Mr Supachai is well aware that abhisit will not contest the election unless it's "free and fair". Therefore the EC position must be that the election will be free and fair without the need for reform.

Secondly, abhisit is stuffed. If he contests the election as envisaged by the EC i.e without reform his excuse for the past 6 months of mayhem is rubbished. If he doesn't contest the election his argument about free and fair elections is also rubbished because the EC by holding the election is declaring the election free and fair.

Of course the above is conditional upon what that nabob of negativity, EC election "organiser" somchai gets up to between now and the election.

It wasn't Suthep that killed elections, it was choices the EC made.

Specifically declining help from the Army and Police in clearing the registration stations, closing southern registrations at the shortest date possible, ordering the polling stations to close at the first sign of a mob and stay closed, which let PDRC close large numbers of polling stations on early polling using only small numbers of people.

This is PDRC's march at Bang Khen, do you really think they can stop an election without EC help?

saying the majority of the respondents wanted to see the election held at the earliest possible date or on July 20th

The end is nigh for Suthep and his criminal band.

They know they'll lose the election and they know they'll never again be able to prevent the government from serving a full term.

Their goose is cooked and the people know it.

Yingluck has won the day.

Many of the leaders of the insurrections dating back to the PAD are in for the shock of their lives when they realise they are actually going to end up in jail this time.

Not only that, but this bunch of crooks will not be able to prevent the PTP from passing the long needed amendments to the 2007 coup constitution - the final nail in the coffin of decades of military dictatorship in Thailand.

It's a rout.

it so interesting how some people her on TVF can read the future

You will notice this was not said as an opinion but as a FACT

why we even bother to waste money on a poll

These futuristc TV members have the gift of Knowledge

or are just pure BS

Masterful sophistry!

And totally transparent. A little red spin through creative word interpretation never hurts the cause eh?

You'll be back claiming Yingluck is the real PTP leader again soon, just because she's accepted the offer to attend.

Yes, the election could have been legally delayed AND it could have been legally held on Feb. 2, 2014. The Constitutional Court held that the election date need only be agreed upon by both the EC and the Government. The Government and EC did agree to the Feb. 2, 2014 date, so why should the government give back anything?

Rather it was because of Suthep/PDRC's blockade of 10% of the voting stations that caused the EC in agreement with the Government to schedule a followup election date for those 10% voting stations. The Democrat/PDRC/Suthep should have been made to reimburse the Government for the subsequent nullification of the election. Holding the election was constitutional; PDRC/Democrat/Suthep's shutdown of voting stations was unconstitutional.

It won't get down the drain...surely a good share will end in some pockets.

Just think 4 billion.....4.000.000.000 Baht.

If you need 8.000 people you can pay everyone 500.000 for that day.

Or are the papers to expensive?

Pity she has never accepted the AG"s many invitations to talk about big brothers illegal passport.

Well she wouldn't need to - the AG wasn't involved.

The Ombudsman, who was involved, finally wrote a report in November 2013 and...............http://thaifinancialpost.com/2013/11/11/ombudsman-chief-to-submit-report-on-former-pm-thaksins-passport-to-cabinet-and-parliament/

Since then the governments been a bit busy dealing with something a bit more important, keeping suthep and his unelected peoples council away from the door.

On half the south the election organizing staff resigned so no people for registration or polls. I think in NST they fly the candidates per helicopter to a remote area for registration but only did it for PTP and a PTP clone party (PTP got the MP with 18 votes, the other got 0 votes, he even didn't vote for himself) but not for any other party.

That was complete doomed to failure and should have been canceled before.

Best would have been if the EC would have resigned to allow reforms.

It's just over man.

It's plain to see for anyone without an agenda to push

The minute the US sent the letter voicing their dissatisfaction the jig was up.

Now it's all about face saving and avoiding jail

Expect some sort of amnesty for all in the next year or two.

Suthep is a dead duck.

Even the nutless Abhisit pays him no heed anymore.

No matter how many times you repeat your wishful thinking, it will never come true.

The courts will do the right thing and impeach the useless idiot puppet pm.

The reds will attack. The army will repel them.

Then wait and see what's next...
