Gandtee
On a visit from my ex boss, after a week he commented " Same song, different dresses". Just about sums it up I think, although some of the music, not songs, can get my old bones rattling!
tookwan cottage
Ah yes, I can empathize with the OP. It is a real shame—as others have pointed out, there is a great array of Thai music, as well as visiting bands (did anyone see Explosions in the Sky last night at Moonstar?). It also applies to cover versions of Western songs, such as Pink Floyd, etc. The endless repetition is perplexing, as I used to live near a venue in CM that played the same set list EVERY night! Anyway, this year looks good for international bands performing in the Kingdom, so I am pleased about this. Hang in there Sandman77, as I share your pain! smotherb
Thai music is very similar to American country music--you know, something loke, My wife left and took the dog . . . sure to miss the dog. Some of it is very popular and gets replayed over and over as loud as possible. Try playing, "Your Cheatin' Heart" by Hank Williams over an over at the highest decibles possible--your neighbors will love you
Just1Voice
I have my own music that I've downloaded, mostly stuff from 70's & early 80's, and my 100% "old school" Thai wife loves most of it. She actually asked me to make her cd's of "Journey", "Foreigner", "Kansas" and "Boston" that she can play in the car when she's driving. Although I did have to finally make her stop putting them in the kereoke player and trying to sing along. Told her she sounded more like she was in pain than singing. DrTuner
What a set of pipes this girl has -- watch before it gets taken down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJdPs68evDI Unfortunately Da hasn't made anything new that I've heard in years. She had to go to surgery due to over stressed voice cords, if I remember correctly. Too bad, she's pretty much the only female Thai worth listening to. I managed to see her live a couple of times too, very entertaining.

sirchai
I guess they were still playing 'Gamlang style' over Songkran in a majority of towns .. thats been a big hit for over a year now. A disposable dance track disappears in a few weeks in the west. I was in a supermarket the other day, 'OK Naka' was playing .. how old is that pop song ? 10-15 years. People still love to hear it. Same with the old tunes. Why does the storyline of Thai "drama" shows never change ? Why does my next-door neighbour eat 'gaeng som' everyday ? It's a simple answer .. Because thats what they like. "Gamlang", before a statment like " Pomm Gamllang gap Baan" usually means that you're on your way home soon, at least trying to do so. You should rent "Gamlang and OK Naklua" for a week and enjoy to fly a kite. Or maybe both. bina
funnily enough, hubby dear, here in israel, the main fan of old time issaan and carabao music, complains bitterly that at work he only hears the same five israeli 'mizrachi' music- which is like the oriental/mis eastern turkish cry songs: my wife left me for an other man, i have nothing, your love was like a fire, now i feel dead blablablabla ... and those radio stations out number the western english speaking music and the westernized israeli music... he says its all the same: my wife left me for an other man, i have nothing, your love was like a fire, now i feel dead..." - so there u go, to each his own. i love country and western but really, the lyrics also are the same: the boss is bad, my wife is a two timer, i have no money, life is shit.... and europop? dont get me started. my husband also plays the phin so we have lots of tracks of phin music but essentially, it repeats itself with variations. i used to listen to the grateful dead (sugar magnolia being one of my faves) for hours and hours. was in the states about two years ago, and was unable to listen to anything on the radio as it was all hiphop style stuff with violent messages and basically didnt sound like music to me... my brain still stuck on jethro tull, pink floyd, and, yes u can guess my age... that is why people like to hear the same things over and over, not because its 'art' but because its' familiar, homey, like home cooked mommm's food, so it relaxes and calms down a person. btw, some of the luuk thung words from the 1970's were very on the spot: for men going over seas to work as migrant workers, sending money home, and finding their wife had run off with a rich farang, the words were spot on and reflected a new reality, but more real then the basic teenage bs of i love her she doesnt love me global music. sometimes its the history of the music or the words that makes the connection and if u dont have the connection it is meaningless. the same going for my husband: many of our music lyrics are about young love with the soldier getting killed and the girl getting a letter from him the day after, or about best friends in the army with death at the door, or famous battles.... they are all popular songs here, all tear jerkers and are played over and over and over around memorial day etc... and hubby, who doesnt share our history, cant stand it, it bores him. to us its super meaningful... btw siliporn is great, and try youtube for soonchock soonontad for master phin playing...
