I've seen this so many times. Go to visit my girlfriend's family and everyone just expects you to buy the beer because of your skin colour. Its quite funny to see how quick the moochers disappear when the beer runs out. And they never offer to buy for me. Seems to be more an Issaan thing as my ex wife's family from Phayao would always buy for me.

Another reason why I prefer the more educated and wealthier Thais to associate with. They tend to have better manners and be much less of the freeloader mentality.

Been there with my ex wife. It really is all about who you mix with.

Example when the plane lands in udon there's at least 10 members of family for 1 fallang .

Now I came back to my friends I used to mix with in London / BKk things are different.

People are quick to run down the issan people . But it's the country and the system here that has made them what they are.

Admittedly some are lazy. But most ate like you and me. They have desires and wants.

Its not impossible at all, many come to Bangkok, here they have more opportunity its more about the person than lack of opportunity.

My Wife went form rural Issan , no electricity, to BKK at 14, (her Mother died shortly after Dad was a useless bum now dead), worked doing anything, paid for her education in BKK often working through the nights selling credit cards amongst other things, clothes factories etc , learnt English at the temple, did 2 jobs for over 8 years earnt 11k when we met.

Now through a bit of help she gets more than 200k a month, she works non stop past midnight many days and I know many of her friends who did the same.

Her Sister and most family members are BONE IDLE even though she has given them many opportunities to help her, they want just handouts, she doesnt give. If they did help her they would be on similar salaries after a while.

No difference at all, many of the people in my Wifes village sold all their land for a fast buck and are now broke still sitting on their <deleted> begging her for handouts.

Only one of her Sisters is decent and works well and shes from a family of 10.
