Leaving Thailand for 2 Weeks and Changing Employers

Featured Replies

Hello, I need some help! I'm currently an English teacher at one school (School A) in Sukhothai, and I am changing to another school (School B). I'm currently on a non-b visa and have a work permit with school A. However, from May 14- June 3rd I will be in America. I have just turned in my one month notice for school A meaning my non-b will be cancelled, but will my work permit also be cancelled or can they just update employers?

Also, since I am leaving next week and won't be employed at School A, what kind of visa should I get to re-enter the country? Or can I just do visa on arrival? I was going to get a re-entry visa on my current non-b, but since I will not be employed by School A I don't think I can do that.

What would be my best course of action? Thank you so much!

Your work permit will also become invalid.

Before leaving you should insure your current work permit and your extension of stay (it is not a visa) at immigration is cancelled, You must leave the country or apply for a 7 day extension on the date your extension is canceled.

Your existing work permit must be canceled before before you can apply for a new work permit.

You should try to get the paperwork from your school to get a non-b visa before returning to Thailand.

Is it not possible to just change the place of work, and not the work permit itself? In my work permit there are pages that say : "New Category of Work/New Nature of Work", as well as "New Locality of Work/New Place of Work".

Also I'm not quite sure what you mean by "insuring" my current work permit and extension of stay at immigration.

And as far as cancelling my extension of stay, if I leave the country without a re-entry stamp, would it not just cancel automatically as soon as I left for the USA?

And to get a new non-B is it easier to get it in America, or in Bangkok? I'd prefer to get a non-B and not a tourist, so I don't have to go to Laos to get a non-B once I am back in Thailand.

Thank you so much!

I have corrected my post to add "is canceled" (not enough coffee). That advice is the proper way to do things to keep your records clean. You can just leave but there would be no record of it being cancelled.

Those pages in the work permit are only for changing info for your current job or with the permission of your employer adding a second employer.

It would be better to get the B visa while you are in the states. That way you could apply your new work permit and have it issued. One of the honorary consulates in the states would be a good place to get it. See: http://www.thaiembdc.us/dcdp/Thai_Consulate_Directory2

If you mean just getting a 30 visa exempt entry (it not a tourist visa) when your return you would only have 15 days to do a conversion to a non-b if possible. Fifteen days might not enough time to everything done.

Haha no worries about the mistake, I can't funciton without the coffee as well! Ok so just to be clear:

I should go to Immigration and get my extension of stay cancelled, and then get an extension of 7 days/ or leave the country that day?

---> My flight out of Bangkok is at 6:50am so I don't think I could get it cancelled and leave the same day. How much does the 7 day extension cost? I'm trying to save as much money as possible because I'm already going to have to buy more passport pages, re-buy visas/work permits, etc. etc.. Also, what happens if I cancel it when I come back from the USA? Could I just wait to officially cancel it until I am back in Thailand, and then begin applying for the new one? Or is that against the law/incur a fine or something?

And how long do the honorary consulates (ideally the one in Oklahoma) usually take to get a non-B?

Sorry for all the questions and thank you so much for all the help!

All extensions cost 1900 baht.

If you are flying out from Bangkok and left the morning after you cancel the extension you would not be fined for an overstay of less than 24 hours when you leave. The officer would just put a small stamp stating you had an overstay of less than 24 hours.

There would be nothing for them to cancel after you return because you will be on a new permit to stay after you return.

The effective date of cancellation depends on what is stated on your termination letter. There is no rule that says you only have 24 hours to leave based on when you get your cancellation done at an immigration office, but rather 24 hours from what is stated on your letter. Therefore, make sure your letter states a termination date after your intended departure from Thailand. Then get a new non-B before returning.

Hello again,

I have another question. The lady at the consulate back in the States is trying to get me to get a $200 Multiple Entry Non-B because she says it lasts a year, whereas I want the $80 single entry non-b, but she says it only lasts 90 days. I believe in these past 6 months I've been living here I got a single entry 90 day one, and then got an extension. Does that sound right? Or is that not possible and she is right to say I should get the multiple entry?

Thanks!

If you can qualify for an extension of stay a single entry is all you need.

And to qualify for an extension of stay, I just need a job here, correct?

A job and the proper paperwork from a qualified employer.

If you're not sure whether your job will last a year, you don't mind traveling once every 3 months (or you have to anyway as part of your job) and/or you don't want your visa and permission to stay tied to your work permit you might as well get a multiple entry 1-year visa that gives you almost 15 months in Thailand on 90 day stays each time. You can also obtain an extension of stay at any time during the validity of the visa for the purposes of work if you have the right paperwork, which would then invalidate the 1 year multi non-B and subject you to the requirement of cancelling your permission to stay and doing a visa run should your work end.

Actually as long as a multiple entry visa is still valid getting an extension of stay does not make it invalid. It does make it unusable for as long as you have the extension because using it would invalidate the extension.
