Two Cambodians have been arrested in Thailand for allegedly smuggling about 10,000 methamphetamine pills between the two countries, a border official said yesterday.

Moeung Mony, an official at the Cambodian-Thai Border Relations Office in Poipet, said the two, believed to be married and in their 20s, were arrested on Sunday after crossing
the border.

Thailand still has the death penalty for some drug offences. The most recent executions, however, were carried out in 2009, some six years after the previous one.

“As I know, according to the Thai law they could face the death penalty,” Mony said, adding that police had found 10,000 yama pills and 100 grams of Ecstasy in hidden compartments inside their shoes.

So Channary, commander of Border Police Unit 911, said the bust was the biggest of the year so far and estimated the drugs to be worth about $100,000.

Neth Sary, a consular official in Thailand’s Sa Kaew province, could not be reached.
