Actually it's Ipoh. I lived there for about a year in the 1970s. I doubt if it has changed very much since then. Its wealth is based on tin mining and it is a predominately Chinese town. There is very little to see or do - although I do recall that it had the most massage parlours in Malaysia - over a hundred!

Personally if I was looking at Malaysia then I would think that Penang is a better option. There has been a huge number of condos built there in recent years and I suspect with the world financial decline that there is a very low occupancy rate so maybe a bargain could be had.

I lived in Penang for 6 years in the 90's I watched to grow to overcrowded. Unless they have completed the talked about but never started road out in the sea, I could not see myself going there again.

Possibly there are some not so crowded areas west of Georgetown toward the beaches but I doubt it.

Did a visa run to Georgetown earlier in the year, hated the place, It is a Muslim country so compared to Thailand quite curtailed, would'nt like to live there. I guess that's why so many Malaysians go to Hat Yai for entertainment. rolleyes.gif

"Lived" south of Ipoh in the 50's but we were getting shot at and ambushed in those days !

Yes Penang is now overcrowded - all those condos!!! However I'd put it above Ipoh as a place for a westerner to retire. Parts of Georgetown are particularly seedy around the Hotel Malaysia area - lots of druggies and TVs - but I wouldn't imagine a westerner retiring to live in that area. And yes, Malaysia is a muslim country although in Penang and Ipoh it would be a minority religion.

Little to see or do, eh? That explains all the MP's. Could keep one busy for a few lifetimes. What do you suppose happens there?

If that's what you like you can shag yourself into oblivion!

But as there are almost as many MPs in Penang then personally I'd recommend Penang.
