Traffic police reports road closure at 7 locations in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 10 May 2014 (NNT) – The police's Traffic Control and Command Center has urged commuters to avoid 7 spots in Bangkok that have been closed to traffic and protesters' rally sites as well as the 5 television stations being occupied by anti-government protesters.

According to the traffic police, the area in front of Channel 3 television station has been closed off to traffic – all lanes on Rama 4 outbound were not usable and only one lane was usable on Rama 4 inbound.

On the Phahonyothin Rd. segment in the vicinity of the Army's Channel 5 television station, traffic inbound to Victory Monument was only being allowed through a single lane, although none of the outbound lanes were affected.

No lanes have been closed on the segment of Rama 9 Rd. near Channel 9 television station, because the protesters there have all moved inside the station compound.

Protesters at NBT Channel on Viphawadi - Rangsit Rd. have shut off traffic on all inside lanes of the inbound segment. Outside lanes were still usable as normal. On Phetchaburi Tat Mai Rd., all traffic lanes were closed in the vicinity of the entrance to RCA.

At Channel 7, the stretch of Phahonyothin inbound lanes from the TMB Bank head office to Soi Choei Phuang were closed.

Traffic lanes on the stretch of Uthong Nai Rd. near Parliament were also shut off.

BOI: it is functioning normally; investors not leaving Thailand

BANGKOK, 10 May 2014 (NNT) – The Board of Investment asserted on Friday it can still carry on its task of promoting investment, even though the prime minister has been removed from her position.

BOI secretary-general Udom Wongwiwatchai spoke to reporters to address the issue of the BOI working committee being chaired by the prime minister, and whether the BOI's work would be affected by the vacated position. Mr. Udom affirmed that the acting prime minister will effectively take over the chairmanship of the Board of Investment.

He added that the BOI will, starting from next week, work toward completing the endorsement process for large-scale investment projects that have already been submitted. The existing projects that were awaiting investment incentives approval had a combined value of 750 billion baht. Mr. Udom expected that approvals will be granted within 3 to 4 months from now.

Regarding the political situation, Mr. Udom said that existing investors viewed politics as a short-term occurrence and these investors would not relocate their bases from Thailand. This group of investors accounts 90% of all investors that have sought the BOI's investment incentives endorsement. The remaining 10% might re-evaluate their options pending the situation.

Investment projects seeking the BOI's endorsements this year are expected to have a combined value of between 700 and 900 billion baht, added Mr. Udom.

CAPO affirms political situation under control

BANGKOK, 10 April 2014 (NNT) – The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) believes there will be no clashes between the pro- and anti-government groups.

Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanathabutr, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Advisor to the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), has given a firm assurance that both the police and the army have the political situation under control as they have prepared more than 60,000 security officers to help maintain peace and order.

Lt Gen Paradorn expressed his personal belief that violence will not take place between the two sides, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), thanks to the locations of both demonstrations, which are far away from one another.

Security agencies tightened measures already in place, right after the Constitutional Court gave its ruling to have Ms Yingluck Shinawatra removed from her post as Prime Minister.
