Army will not withdraw forces from Govt House

BANGKOK, 11 May 2014 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Army confirms army officers are still safeguarding Government House, saying they have allowed the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) to hold a press conference at the Santi Maitri building in the hope to prevent confrontation.

Commander of the Royal Guard Division 1 Maj.Gen.Apirat Kongsompong said four companies of army officers and two companies of police officers remained at Government House. The PDRC promised that it would stay within the areas allowed by the army and the protesters would not enter Government House, the commander said.

The army used talks, not force to deal with the protesters, Maj.Gen.Apirat confirmed.

The PDRC is not allowed to use Government House’s main building Thai Ku Fa and asked to conform to its agreements with the army. If the group breaches the agreements, the army will have to force the group to leave.

M 79 grenades fired at anti government protesters

5-11-2014-1-05-36-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Two M 79 grenades were fired at anti government protesters converging at Government House Saturday night, wounding two protesters and damaging three cars.

People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) Suthep Thaugsuban was inside Government House when the grenade attack happened.

The Erawan Centre said the first grenade landed near the fence inside Government House compound at about 10.50 p.m.

Two protesters were injured.

Another grenade landed in front of Ratvinivh secondary school near Chamaimaruches bridge where anti government protesters’ stage was erected. Nobody was hurt in this attack.

Nitithorn Lamlua, advisor to the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand, said he suspected the perpetrators fired the grenades at Government House from adjacent tall building.

He said the grenade attack was made as PDRC leader Suthep Thuagsuban was holding a meeting with other co leaders at a tent near the protest stage.
It landed 300 metres off the stage.

He added the grenade attack would not scare away protesters, but would encourage them to go ahead with the protest to bring the caretaker government down.

Toll way blocked by protesters back to normal

BANGKOK, 11 May 2014 (NNT) - Transport Minister Chatchart Sittiphan has explained that the Don Mueang toll way halted its service in order to help stranded cars exit the toll road after the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) closed and opened it many times on Saturday.

Mr Chatchart said the Don Mueang toll way decided to close all entrances to prevent a buildup of cars which would block the exits. The toll way now resumed normal operations, the minister said.

The PDRC closed off the toll way and Vibhavadi road under it in front of the Police Club around 2 PM before opening the outbound traffic shortly after. The group however blocked and unblocked the toll way again around 3.30 PM.

Meanwhile, the Department of Highways admitted that it was not easy to prevent the PDRC from blocking the toll way since it had no security forces. It would therefore request officers from the Center for Administration of Peace and Order to assist the commuters affected by the protest group’s blockade.

Samsung chief has emergency heart operation

SEOUL - The head of South Korea's largest business group Samsung underwent an emergency operation Sunday after developing symptoms of heart failure, hospital officials said.

Lee Kun-Hee, 72, was admitted to a hospital near his home in Seoul Saturday night due to a respiratory problem.

He showed symptoms of heart failure and received emergency treatment before being moved early Sunday to Samsung Medical Centre where his problem was diagnosed as "acute cardiac infarction", the hospital said in a statement.

"He is now recuperating in a stable condition after undergoing an operation," it said.

The procedure involved the placement of a stent, a tube inserted to unblock blood vessels, Yonhap news agency said.

Lee is chairman of Samsung Electronics, the group’s flagship firm and the world’s largest technology company in revenue terms.

He is largely credited with turning Samsung -- founded by his father in 1938 -- into a global brand which is now the world’s top chipmaker and smartphone maker.

Lee is also the de facto head of the entire business empire, which employs some 200,000 staff in dozens of affiliates and dominates every aspect of life in South Korea.

Lee underwent lung surgery in the late 1990s and has been suffering from respiratory complications since then.
