Vesak is the international name for Wisakha Bucha Day. It's been a United Nations holiday since 1999.

I read that it's celebrated today so is it a major holiday today?

It marks the day on which the Buddha was Born, died, and gained enlightenment.

The other two main days are Asaha puja and Maha puja. Vesak is the biggest.

Asaha puja is when he started the triple gem by teaching Dhamma to the five followers ...his Sangha started when one of the five became Sotapanna during his talk.

Maha puja is when 2,500 Arahants all came together in one place without prior arrangement. They has all been ordained by his 'Ehipassico' (come and see) invitation to try out the Dhamma life. He taught the basic teaching of all the Buddhas (ovadapattimok) to them.... Avoid evil, Do good, purify the mind.
