You both apply for a double entry tourist visa, which gives you two stays of 60 days, each stay can be extended by 30 days.

You enter Thailand and get a stay of 60 days, a week or so before the 60 days are finished you visit immigration and pay 1,900 baht and get a 30 day extension. The extension will start after the 60 days are finished, so you do not have to wait till the very last day to get the full 90 days.

After the 90 days are finished, you leave the country and can come right back in the same day (after having entered and left another country) for a new 90 days, which you can extend for another 30 days.

Rememebr to make both entries before the visa itself expires. In Australia that will be 6 months after applying for the visa.

A 2 entry tourist visa would be your a good option. Each entry gives you a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days at immigration. After the first entry you would need to make a border run to use the 2nd entry.

If your wife is Thai you could also get a multiple entry non-o visa that would give unlimited 90 day entries for a year. You could also could get a single entry non-o visa that would give you a 90 day entry that you could extend for 60 days to visit your wife.

You could also get the 60 day extension for a tourist visa entry.
