Park patrols increased to prevent further mishaps against elephants and gaurs

PRACHUAP KHIRIKHAN, 16 May 2014 (NNT) – The chief of Prachuap Khirikhan Provincial Police have tasked investigators with resolving the case of the recent poisoning of an elephant in Kuiburi National Park. Meanwhile, park rangers have increased patrols to keep track of elephant and gaur herds in the park in the hope of preventing further mishaps from happening to the animals.

The park rangers have been monitoring the behaviors of the wild elephants and gaurs near the Kunchon project area, where a male elephant carcass was found this week near the spot where a number of gaurs earlier died. Before the discovery of the dead elephant, the officials found insecticide residues on a large swathe of the ground in the project area, which led them to discover bags of insecticide left behind.

According to park officials, the patrols consist of rangers on foot and on vehicles, who have been keeping track of the herds via binoculars. So far, no anomalies have been detected in the behaviors of the animals.

In the meantime, the police are checking purchase orders of Methomyl, the toxic chemical found, and other pesticides in their effort to identify the individuals responsible for the suspected poisoning of the elephant.

Perhaps rangers should be monitoring wildlife with binoculars, while police investigators monitor park officials with GPS trackers, hidden cameras and microphones. Together they'll surely find out why elephants are being killed in Kuiburi and Kaeng Krachan.
