CHIANG RAI: -- Police seized 100 kilograms of ice worth Bt100 million in Chiang Rai's Chiang Saen district early yesterday morning, while three other drug busts in Mae Sai, Phan and Muang districts yielded a total of 4.2 kilograms of heroin and 162,000 yaba pills.

In Chiang Saen, police chased two pick-up trucks that tried to flee from a checkpoint at 1am and managed to stop one by shooting one of its tyres. However, the two suspects on board managed to flee, leaving behind four sacks filled with 100kg of crystal meth or ice. Police later stopped the other truck and arrested the two people onboard.

Commander of Narcotics Suppression Division 3 Pol Maj-General Phanudet Boonruang said it is suspected that the ice was smuggled by a Hmong drug gang from a neighbouring country. The haul is believed to be worth Bt100 million on the street.

Separately, the police announced three drug busts in Chiang Rai that yielded 4.2kg of heroin and 162,000 yaba pills.

In the first case, a man from Myanmar was arrested along with 4.2kg of heroin while delivering it in front of a local school in tambon Mae Sai. In the second case, three men were arrested in Muang district for having 102,000 yaba pills and three guns and ammunition in their possession. In the third case, a 20-year-old man was arrested in Phan district for trying to smuggle 60,000 yaba pills on a bus to Nakhon Sawan.

As part of the Sor Por Kor 4-01 (สปก.4-01) land reform scheme, Suthep gave title deeds to 592 plots of land in Khao Sam Liam, Kamala and Nakkerd hills of Phuket province to 489 farmers. It was later found that members of 11 wealthy families in Phuket were among the recipients. Suthep addressed a huge crowd in his Surat Thani constituency a month before a no-confidence debate and called on his supporters to march on Bangkok in the hundreds of thousands to defend his reputation.[5] The scandal led Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai of the Democrat Party to dissolve the House of Representatives in July 1995 in order to avoid the no-confidence debate.[6] In subsequent elections, Thai Nation Party won a majority, leading to the downfall of Chuan Leekpai's Democrat Party-led government.

Wikileaks diplomatic cables from the US embassy revealed that many members of his own party have long complained of his corrupt and unethical behavior.[7][8][9]
