“There might be a fee” - How much should I have ready in case I need to sweeten the deal?

Featured Replies

I’m planning to go for a visa run next week to the Mai Sai/Tachilek border.

I’m trying to stay up to date on the martial law, crackdown, and lack of constitution, using this website, but I thought I’d pop into my friendly local immigration office to see about it myself.

The officer told me that sure, I could go out/in and get a 15-day stamp. Even considering I’ve got three tourist visa exemptions since February this year in my US passport.

Or I could ask for a 30-day entry, and “his friend at Mae Sai" would “ask me why I don’t just get a tourist visa” instead. The reason is simply, I’m in Thailand. I asked him if there is a fee, and he said, “there might be.” But I think this was his way of saying I might have to, shall we say, leave a tip, if want a month’s re-entry. By the way, he seemed unsure if 3 or 4 entries was the limit.

My question for you folks is, do you think we’re talking five hundred baht? Two thousand? The (legit) 7-day extension costs 1900B. Getting a month might be higher if we used linear logic. But I don’t want to go in and offer a baht more than I have to.

I’d really appreciate y’alls best estimates.

Don't try to bribe them. Especially not now. If you are from USA and you are allowed another visa exemption, the G7 countries do get 30 days at the boarder. And you can't get a tourist visa at the boarder or Immigration. Only at Embassies and Consulates
