Schistosomiasis was the principle reason I declined invites to swim in rivers or the local ponds, alligators was the other. I also stay clear of swimming holes, pools and rivers in Asia.Just a correction here; the parasite you are referring to above is Onchocerca volvulus which causes river blindness. The bilharzia parasite (worm) is only a few mm long, if that. And humbly to correct your correction, it's Guinea Worm Dracunculus medinensis which is long and extracted by slowly wrapping around a stick in Africa, not Onchocerca volvulus. Also with all due respect to the posters here, it's great to assist OP with general information but a thorough diagnosis and health plan is called for.
