Half Laos Baby with British citizenship born in Thailand

Featured Replies

My baby was born in Thailand, I am british my partner is from Laos. Baby already has british passport, can he apply for Thai passport also? And would make a difference to what visa I have?

And how would I go about getting him a Laos passport? And would this allow me to live in Laos or does it not make any difference?

Per above, neither parent is Thai so the child has no Thai nationality.

Can't adive you regarding Laos. The father might first need to legitimise the child to become legally his and with that have Laotian nationality. As it stands now, the child has no legal father, only a mother.

I can only add what I know of my wifes Laos workers.

One had to take his son back to Laos to get a passport before he started school here. Apparently however well he does at school he can't have any qualifications here. This is secondhand knowledge so not 100% on that.

Laos can own nothing here whether they have the money or not. No business, house, land, motor bike, car, driving licence (I believe), they basically have no or very little rights.

I have know idea if the above is true for someone with joint nationality from a western country, but it could make things more difficult for him if he lives in Thailand with Laos nationality.

Asked the wife to clear this up.

Apparently Laos people can own motorbikes etc if they have a proper passport and visa, but most don't do this as they can only get visas for 4 years before having to return to Laos for a minimum of 2 years before returning to Thailand as part of an agreement between Thailand and Laos.

I have a son with my Lao girlfriend. I do believe that Lao does not recognise dual citizenship. Also if you are not married, like me it becomes a nightmare as foreigners are not allowed to have a relationship with a Lao women outside of marraige. Now this might, which is probably is, be different for a Lao man. For me to live in Lao I would have to marry my partner, and as I'm led to believe this is a long, costly and drawn out process.

As your partner is from Lao, would he not be able to find out some more information on immigrating to his own country? If he can please let me know. I'd like to find out if the rules are different for men.

Good luck.
