Perfidy examples during the Red Shirt riots May '10

Featured Replies

For those not familiar with the word, literally speaking, perfidy means the breaking of faith. It is considered a heinous war crime (though I'm not exactly sure why war isn't considered a heinous war crime) as it is the debased intent to exploit decency. From the 1949 Geneva Conventions:

  • Acts inviting the confidence of an adversary to lead him to believe that he is entitled to, or is obliged to accord, protection under the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, with intent to betray that confidence, shall constitute perfidy.

A friend of mine has a theory that the world is becoming more perfidious and treacherous. We were talking about the Red Shirt riots and a number of examples of perfidy came to mind:

  • young children used as human shields inside the barricaded Red Shirt camp
  • "Black Shirts" firing from within crowds of civilians
  • "Black Shirts" wearing military uniforms
  • Red Shirts attacking ambulance carrying injured and unarmed soldiers
  • Red Shirts attacking hospitals looking for enemy combatants
  • Red Shirts preordained "friendly fire" to create civilian casualties blamed on soldiers
  • Red Shirts leaders giving speeches using annihilation rhetoric
  • Red Shirts protesters promised Safe Passage home only to set fire to Bangkok
  • claiming the right of protection as peaceful protesters despite being armed
  • a toddler placed on the barricades

Any examples I've missed?
