Thanks for your quick reply stoneyboy.

Yes, most translations only state 'to steam', however some cookbooks state that this word is only used when steaming fish and rice.

I appreciate your help.

Thanks AyG,

I guess it may be seafood, not just fish, but I don't want to spend too much time on it, if it is not specifically indicated that way in Thai. I probably should just indicate it as 'to steam'.

By the way, what do you mean by a 'Thai corpus', if I may ask?

Thank you.

I just had a look on Thai Wikipedia. It lists a whole list of other things that can be neung: pork with lime, chicken with lemongrass, sweetcorn. Definitely not just seafood and rice.

A corpus is a database of a large number of texts in a given language. You can then search to find which words come before and after a given term. You're probably aware of the Cobuild English language dictionary. It was, I understand, the first dictionary to be developed using this approach to analyse how language is actually used in real life, rather than relying upon the wisdom of lexicographers.

The Thai corpus I use is at http://www.sealang.net/thai/corpus.htm

Thanks AyG,

I think now that we have absolutely confirmed that it applies to anything steamed.

I appreciate your explanation on corpus and the link to Thai corpus. I was not aware of that. Looks like it might be useful.

Best regards

Yes. From what I've learned. You can use it to refer to anything steamed. E.g. ปลานึ่ง ซาลาเปานึ่ง ข้าวเหนียวนึ่ง ฟักทองนึ่ง ฯลฯ
