PHUKET: -- Phuket police have netted a Myanmar man for allegedly scamming four compatriots into working on a fishing trawler for six months without pay.

The suspect, identified as Ao Mo, 49, has confessed to human trafficking and helping illegal migrants avoid arrest, Pol Lt General Panya Mamen said yesterday.

After Ao Mo lured the unnamed victims into unpaid hard-labour jobs as crewmembers on fishing boats, he later demanded Bt20,000 from each family to get the workers back to Myanmar.

Ao Mo was arrested in a recent sting operation. The families had agreed to cooperate with police by giving the money to him at a rendezvous point.

He also admitted to doing the same thing on several occasions in the past two years, after working as a trawler hand for eight years in Phuket.

Surely, without an involvment of thai boat owner and the royal thai navy bringing those economic immigrants within the country, all this crimes wouldn'n be possible.

The travler hand hasn't got means and connections to bring in people and exploting them. But confessions, on behalf of his eployee, is always apreciated by cops
